I was just sitting at home and thinking that it would be nice to sit down and enjoy a pipe. I figured since I have vanilla candles burning throughout the house that I'd go with a Vanilla Cavendish so that the smells from what I'm smoking would mesh nicely with the smell of the candles.
The Vanilla Cavendish that I have is not one of my more enjoyable smokes by any stretch of the imagination... it's a remnant of one of my most early ventures to purchase pipe tobacco... from a drug store. <shudders> Therefore I didn't want to put it into any of my better pipes, and didn't feel like using my cheap pipe that I often use for aromatics because the bowl on it is larger than I was looking for. So, I let my mind wander and think of different possibilities.
I remembered back to my days when I used to enjoy smoking green leaves as opposed to the darker ones which I now enjoy. I remembered having bought a "VaporGenie"
which was a pipe designed to vaporize the active substances out of various smoking substances. They are marketed for the purpose of "legal herbs" such as Tobacco, but everyone knows that is just a smokescreen (pun intended) for their real purpose.
I do know that water pipes (hookahs) are used for both tobacco and other substances, and thought vaporizers may be similar. I did some brief reading of medical studies which show health benefits of vaporizing tobacco over smoking it in it's combustible form, and figured hey it's something that is really done! They even have studies which prove it... so I decided to give it a try.
And that's where I made my mistake.
The first problem I encountered was in the fact that you need to use the lighter every single time you want to take a puff from it (although I should probably use the word "hit" rather than puff because this device should stay in the realm of green leaves). Needing to relight every time was enough to annoy me in and of itself... I'm sure we can all think back to when we started with pipes how we'd get annoyed needing to relight several times during the course of one sitting... now imagine needing to relight EVERY TIME!
The second problem was that despite the fact that I was not inhaling any smoke, this tobacco still gave me mild tongue bite after the second "hit". That just didn't set too well with me. I enjoy having found tobaccos which are tasty and that I do not suffer tongue bite from while smoking my pipes.
The last problem that I'll mention is that the first half of the bowl tasted just like candy, probably because the only thing which was vaporizing off was the casing on the tobacco... and the second half of the bowl tasted worse than any cheap tobacco I've ever tasted (in pipes or cigars or even in nightmares). Non enjoyable to say the least.
When vaporizing this bowl of tobacco I could feel the effects of the nicotine with every "hit". However, to me that's rather inconsequential, as I don't smoke for the effects of the nicotine but rather because I enjoy being able to relax and enjoy something tasty. But, I do know that there are people out there (including some on CP) for whom a large part of why they smoke is for the nicotine... so I figured I should at least mention that aspect of my experience.
In short, leave the vaporizers to those who enjoy the green... rather than letting them ruin your time with tobacco.
