Im having a little problem with my new Humi. I have calibrated the hydrometre and also purchased a digital one. I have about 90 cigars in my 100 capacity Humi. Without the humidifier installed it ranges between 68% and 71% but with my humidifier installed it ranges from 70%-76%. At the moment im using the humifier for one day and then removing it for one day. My humi is about 10 days old. My question is, is it possible to run a humidor without using a humidifier??? Sorry but im very new to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Were do you live? The reason I ask is because I am here in Jersey and this time of year humidity is naturally around at a high level. I have no problem keeping levels in my coolidor correct but in the winter time it becomes bone dry in the air and I have more trouble with humidity levels. Just curious if this may be the case!!

The beads are still a good idea. Like Local669 I am from Jersey and the humidity here is high right now. In fact I haven't misted any distilled water on my beads all summer long. Still holding steady at 65%. But the beads offer me protection from humidity spikes in the summer and dry conditions in the winter. Buy a little more beads then you need as buffer. Best of luck!

If the hygrometer is properly calibrated, and using the humidifier on alternate days is working - then do what works! The beads are a good recommendation for steady humidity, but since the humidor is new it may just need more time to stabilize. Just 2 questions:

1. Did you properly season the humidor before stocking it?
2. Can you go to the "Introduce Yourself Here" forum page and let us know who you are? :)

Did you use PG solution or plain distilled water?

Is the humidity dropping below your stated 68 if you leave the humidifier out a second day?

What is your target humidity?

If you initially charged your humdifier with a good dose of PG solution, learn to add a little water at a time. I have one Humidor that I've always used foam, and it is rock solid. My target in it is 69-70 RH. As soon as I see it hit 68, I initially add about a thimble full of water. If that doesnt do it, and it usually does for most of the year, I add about half as much, again. I also like Humidors with two elements, as that makes it a little easier to regulate humidity, by either using both, or one at times. I use PG solution every few months, and water every few weeks.

Good luck.

I have a smaller humi then yours and I'm thinking I don't need one in mine either. I have a 125g fish tank in my apt so I think that does enough for the humidity in my place.

Beads are the best as previously said.

You should head over to the introduce yourself thread and tell us a little about yourself. If you plan to stick around this place that 100 ct. Will prove to be too small anyway trust me!

I have read conflicting reports on whether to wipe down the humi with distilled water so i didnt do that. I just put some distilled water in a shot glass and left it in there for a few hours. I then put in about 100 cigars that i just transported from da USA to here :)

Im 31 and from London. I recently started smoking cigars and realised how much cheaper they where in the USA than in UK, so i bought 120 back with me :)

I went to JR Cigars and BarclayRex. Heres a list of some of what i bought:-

Montecristo platinums
JR assorted Toro(Onyx, La Corona, RYJ, Santa Damana,Montecristo)
RYJ Vintage III
Punch gran puro
Partagas Black
Hoyo Sampler (Excaliburs, Dark samutra,Dark Knight 1066)
Robusto sellecion (Montes, Upmanns, RYJ's) X2
Padron 1926
Padron 2000
San Cristobal
Oliva Master BLends 3
CAO Variety (Brazillia, Criollo, Italia, Gold, CX2)
JR Honduran Best buy (10 mixed...Henry clay, Maria Guerra, Upmann Speciality)
JR Dominican Best buy(10 mixed.. Monte, Upman, RYJ etc)

I bought my humi in states too. Im a happy man.

I might check out some beads then. Thanks alot for all your help guys.

It usually takes atleast a day plus to season a humidor, depending on the size. Maybe your cigars have to much humidity in them and need to dry out a bit.

Yeah, i thought that it might just be the volume of cigars i put in at one time, but i assumed that the humidifier was a MUST for a humidor.(If i leave the humidifier out of the humi for a day then the RH drops to 65% and if i leave it in for a day then it rises to 75%..Maybe i should just cut the humidifier in half?? :) ) . BTW, room humidity is 53% and temp is 71-76F.

Thanks again for all your responses.
