Seems more and more as of late i am seeing debating on various boards about if 65% or 70% is the best for cigars get opinions both ways.

Some say anything less than 70% and your taking a risk of dry cigars other say at 65% you will have less draw and burn problems and cigars will age better what do some of the knowlegable people here think? :)

Religious war...

I like my cigars around 63 RH.

I feel if they are at 70 RH I'm smoking water i.e. the flavors are less intense, the cigar burns poorly, etc.

Anything between around 62 and 66 and I'm happy.

I think you'll find that most experienced smokers will say 70 RH is too high. Most experienced smokers prefer stronger flavors, and they know not to smoke too hard on a cigar. A wetter cigar is more appropriate for someone just starting the hobby.

Ask 10 people, the answers you get will depend on how experienced the smokers are as a group, IMHO.

Search is nice.
...perhaps the classic visual aid is in order:

So? Go for 67.5% and you will be spot on, judging from what "they" say! Right?

Do you know who they is? Look below :whistling:

RH is completely about personal preference. You'll find answers from 55 - 75% RH. Lots of guys like 65%....right in the middle of the range.

Smokes burning too hot..?? Probably too dry.

Smokes with burn issues, or wrapper issues..?? Probably too wet.

You tell us - what do you like..??

Like everyone said, it is relative to what you like, and it may change over time. When I first started smoking 10 years ago, I tried to maintain 70% because that is what seemed to be what I read. As I progressed in the hobby and my knowledge of cigars I found that anywhere from 63% - 67% left my cigars much better for my tastes. Doesn't mean that everyone else feels the same way

I find that i have draw more draw problem at 70%RH i try to keep it between 65-67%RH sometimes hard to do with the very dry winters here and the very humid summer.

Jeez. I screwed the pooch on this one. Read my post here.

Pembroke335,

This question really begs for a more nuanced answer than "65%" or "70%." Do a little searching and you'll find that the answer is a reflection of personal preference with respect to how cigars feel, how they smoke, and what type of cigar you are storing. The best answer, of course, is the one you discover for yourself.

I found that I enjoy my smokes much more at 62% then 70%. As others have said, it really depends on what YOU like.

Very good info thanks everyone. In my very limited knowledge I was always led to believe that anything under 65% was a death sentence for a cigar. I can now see that this is not the case.

Some very helpful information here, thanks for sharing your preferences, until i came across this post everything I read stated 70% like its the only way to be.

Coming across this post has been very helpful to me. My humidors recently been moving around from 64% to 70% depending on the time of day, and now I know some of you prefer the benefits of a dryer cigar I’m not at all concerned about my readings.

Many thanks!
