Acquired this one from the man himself, preembargo, after I exhausted all efforts in trying to get it in a pass. I couldn’t, so he grabbed it and next thing I know I get bombed with it. What a bro.
So what was the occasion to light it up? Nothing....cigars are meant for smokin'!
Below are my thoughts and opinions on the cigar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
VITAL STATS: (Information courtesy of www.vitolas.net)
Cigar name: Toast Across America 2006 cigars
aka: "TAA 2006"
Vitola: 6 ¼" x 48
Wrapper: El Bajo Sungrown
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominincan
Released: 9/30/2006
Quantity: ~4,000
Rarity: 1/10
MSRP: $25.00 per cigar
Storage: 3 Months @ 65 degrees 63% humidity
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SETUP/TOOLS USED:
Cutter: Palio
Lighter: S.T. Dupont X-Tend
Ashtray: Colibri Fold Up
Pairing: Canada Dry Ginger Ale (10oz)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
PRELIGHT:
- A gorgeous dark wrapper with zero blemishes that I could see.
- The cedar wrap had the TAA 2006 band on it and along with the Charitable Foundation band, it made for an absolutely stellar presentation.
- Cut went flawless
- Prelight draw was outstanding. Not firm, not loose, exactly what I hoped for. This part is usually the most nerve racking for me, because I know that from that prelight draw I can tell how the physical smoking of the cigar is going to go. I was not let down at all.
- I didn’t do any research on this cigar prior to smoking as I wanted to go in fresh
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st Quarter:
- Starts off very similar to other DCMs I have had. A slight sweetness but rather mellow.
- Absolutely loaded with thick white clouds of smoke. My mouth can barely hold a full pull from this bad boy.
- The burn is fabulous. It only took a few seconds from my X-tend to get it going, and I wouldn’t touch it again.
- I expected some spiciness, but I wasn’t seeing it at this point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2nd Quarter:
- Zero burn or draw issues, it’s smoking like a pro.
- I’m surprised at the rate I’m smoking and not getting much of a nicotine buzz. I found it at this point to be much more mellow than I expected. It wasn’t a bad thing, just surprised. I was expecting full bodied and getting medium.
- The sweetness is still very prominent and I love it. The spice is still laying low as if it wants to come out and play but doesn’t like the weather.
- The ash is holding strong, it’s a nice white ash with no curvatures about it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd Quarter:
- No issues with construction, burn, or draw
- I’m usually not very good at grabbing earthy or woodsy out of cigar, but it’s definitely here. Smoking this cigar will help me in the future with these qualities.
- What I’m loving most about this cigar is it’s ability to deliver different tastes but none of them overbearing. It’s like the cigar is introducing them to me just enough so that I know they are there.
- Strength remains medium
- Removed the Charitable Foundation band
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last Quarter:
- At this point I remove the remaining DCM band and begin throwing Bindi a Frisbee. The cigar has already proved to me what I had hoped to find, so I decided to ditch the notes and enjoy the last 15 minutes walking around the yard and such.
- All previous qualities remain, no issues
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall Impressions:
I came in to this cigar hoping to be impressed and find something different from the DCM line. I was definitely impressed, but didn’t see much difference from the standard DCM line other than the overall smoothness of the delivery. The tastes were similar, but it just seemed so much better on the delivery side. I really enjoy the mellow flavors with an amazing amount of smoke along with the perfect draw. It was very easy to enjoy this cigar. I just found the complexity of it lacking slightly and the spice never really came out as I expected. I'm not a huge spice fan though, so I didn't mind.
So, do I find it worthy of a $25.00 price tag? Well, understand, that $25.00 is simply half of a $50.00 price tag with the accompanying FFOX. They are limited release, as part of a charity event, and put out in a sexy wooden coffin. So there is a lot going into the price other than the cigar itself. I do think it represents very well, and doesn’t leave you disappointed in the spent money. If I had to put a price on the smoke itself it would land somewhere in the $15.00 area.
