Being a fan of Davidoff I picked up a handful of these when I saw them at my B&M a few weeks back. Thinking 2 weeks rest should be enough last night I put the torch to one.
Like usual I headed out back by the lagoon to my smoking table. It was a perfect 72 degrees out back with a very light breeze and a full moon. Since I was planning a review I passed on my beverage of choice (scotch) until I was almost finished. To wet my palate I sipped on a diet 7-Up. BTW, this is my 1[sup]st[/sup] cigar review so if this sucks please cut me some slack.
As the title says this is a Robusto and weighs in at 5 inches in length with a ring gauge of 52. A quick nosing the barrel brings on a strong aroma of hay and grass. Nosing the foot brings on a slightly different aroma. For lack of a better term I'd say smoother and less like hay, but not something I can readily identify. The wrapper is a Nicaraguan Sun Grown Maduro and is light in color by comparison to some of the Maduro's I have smoked. The filler and binder is a blend from the Dominican Republic. The cap and overall cigar is like most other Davidoff's which are typically almost flawless.
The cigar was firm in my hand but not overly so. I snipped off the end and found the pre-light draw was perfect with just a little resistance. Toasting the foot brought on more or less the same aroma of hay or dried grass. The 1[sup]st[/sup] puff was a hit of pepper but not in an overpowering way. The earthiness came through shortly there after and the cigar settled in nicely. About the half way point it became creamier but still had rich earthy flavors. Some might say leather, cedar and cappuccino. No surprise I was really enjoying my cigar at this point.
The burn was fairly sharp all the way through but it did require one touch up just shy of the ½ way point. The ash wasn't as tight as I would have expected from Davidoff. In fact it bordered on flakey. I have a feeling these need more time to rest.
This is far from an overpowering cigar and although it was stronger than the other Davidoff's I have smoked it's not what I would call full bodied. However it did produce a lot of flavor along with copious amounts of smoke.
The cigar remained creamy to the end so I smoked it down to the nub. While I enjoyed this cigar at $15-$16 a stick I won't be running out to buy more any time soon. Start to finish I spent an hour and 10-15 minutes smoking this one. As you can see a few minutes before tossing it I switched to a little stronger drink. I am a creature of habit.
