According to the Miami Herald and other similar sources as of 5/1/10 you will need health insurance while you are visiting in Cuba. The details of how this will be handled is not certain and what services will be provided are not clear either. It has been said that one can expect $150/month fee for this insurance and it is hoped that this will be pro-rated at about $5/day. What is not certain is if this insurance will provide emergency services only or services in general. What is certain is that will be a pain in the &$$ dealing with immigration and more paperwork. The bright side is that I could get emergency quadruple by-pass surgery for less than $50. The reasons for this ultimate scheme to drain more $$$ out of the tourists, is that the government of Cuba lost a $27 million court decision in 2001 to a woman that claims she was defrauded by a mickey mouse spy that was invloved in the shoot down of a "Brothers to the Rescue" plane in 1996. The spy was married to the woman and fled the US just before the shoot down. The money was awarded but the case had been idle as how to get the government of Cuba to pay. Recently some lawyers negotiated a lean on the 8 charter companies that provide direct flights to Cuba (some say that 3 of them are Fidel's ghost companies). The order of the day was that they pay directly to a fund to provide for this woman her $27mil, for services that they would be paying the government of Cuba (landing fees, fuel etc). So this health insurance is a way to recoup the $27 mil on hold. John
