Thinking of looking for an antique cabinet, hutch, display shelf etc. and converting it into a humidor. I'd look for something made of solid wood, line it with 1/4" Spanish cedar and build my own trays to fit. Anything I should look out for other than to make sure I can properly seal the doors of such cabinet?

As for humidification, I was thinking of purchasing a regular humidifier from a dept store and putting it on a timer and coordinating humidity levels with a small digital hydrometer.

Any thoughts?

I'd be careful as the stress of humidity can tear apart wood that wasn't properly joined to handle the expansion and contraction that will occur when the outside humidity is drier than the inside humidity...not an expert but I've seen some other posts where some of the BOTLs on here who are wood crafters warned others of the same thing.

On another note...I have seen folks purchase antique Ice boxes or Ice Fridges from the pre-refridgerator days and convert those nicely... they are made sturdy enough (for obvious reasons) to handle the stress and they usually look pretty cool. My neighbor has one I'm trying to steal from him....

Hope that Helps

Salukis?! You wouldn't happen to got o SIU would you? Welcome to cigarpass by the way.

To Babbsy: This has been done a few times with good success, check out the "curiodor" thread to see a great representation of how it all goes together. Be prepared to work with weather stripping for the doors, maybe some magnets, and sealants if there are glass windows.

He's right. When building something that will see high humidity a piece of wood expanding from RH is stronger than any glue joint or dovetail you can throw at it. Wood will, for the most part, expand across the grain. Very little movement will happen end to end. If you allow for this you will feel as though you are doing sloppy work. If you don't allow for movement, you will have done sloppy work and it will destroy itself. I could be wrong......but I'm not.

You might also consider going thicker on the Cedar. It will hold the humidity more consistent over time. Good luck, let me know if I can be of any help.

My first thought is that you should use the search function and you would have seen how, well, stupid (for lack of a better word) that question is. Many of us have built our own custom set-ups.

Introduce yourself and read ALL the sticky's your stay will be much more enjoyable that way. Fill out your profile and read and search more, post less, chances are if you have a question it's already been asked.

You don't happen to have any pictures of these do you? Are you talking about appliance style ice boxes, or wooden? I'm strangely intrigued by this and would love to know more.

thx

If you would have used the search function you would notice I did introduce myself. Go Here: http://www.cigarpass.com/forumsipb/index.php?showtopic=55577
I guess we all forget sometimes....

My bad, my search didn't pull it up but I've been having computer trouble. Welcome.

Something like this would be a neat starter for a custom humidor LINKY

I think I found a nice solid oak cabinet I can use. It has two drawers at the bottom for my cigar supplies and a large enough area for all the hardware required plus cigars.

Now all I have to do is line it and create Spanish cedar shelving. I am also thinking about removing a good part of the door to slip in a glass insert but I want to see how well I can seal the door first.

Babbsy- did you build that humi? If so post some pics..

Cheers!
