Well, for a change of pace, I thought I'd dig WAAAAAAAY down in the coolerdor tonight for one of "those" cigars, you know, the ones that people toss in as "extras" when they send their cigar pool winnings to me. I've got two or three of these sitting there waiting to be stuck in a newbie sampler pack :0 but just for the heck of it, I figured I'd light one up expecting the worse. The first thing I did was to look it up on the JR website for a description to see what I was getting myself into. Here's the description from JR:

CUBA ALIADOS
Handmade HON
Wrapper: ECSU Binder: ECSU Filler: DR/NIC
Medium-Full Bodied
Cuba Aliados is produced by the famed cigar maker Rolando Reyes, Sr. in Danli, Honduras. It is a benchmark Honduran blend with DR Piloto Cubano seed leaf added to temper the recipe. The result is a very flavorful, smooth, full-bodied smoke that is sure to please.

The ones I have are the "Originale" or a 6 1/2 x 46 maduro. After reading the JR description, I said "Well maybe this won't be so bad after all...."

I punched the cigar, it felt very good, construction is excellent for a $2.00 cigar. I did a pre-light draw expecting it to feel like drawing on straw BUT I was surprised to find that the draw was very similar to those "illegal" cigars that many people around here seem to like

Hmmmmmm, then I was saying "Well so far so good but how will this 'dog rocket' I MEAN 'affordable cigar' taste?" So I light it up and WOW, the flavor of the smoke and the wrapper was fantastic, smooth just as advertised ;)

Okay, okay I sez to myself "Fine BUT the most important thing to me is will is burn straight and not keep going out on me." Wouldn't you know, NO RELIGHTS with a nearly perfect, even burn

Now lately I have been finding that I do not enjoy anything but Havanas BUT this cigar was an unbelievable surprise!!!

This cigar FAR EXCEEDED my expectations and there is absolutely nothing bad I can say about this cigar.

To me, they are far superior to Consuegras, similar in taste and strength but they seem to be rolled a little firmer which is what I have become accustomed to lately.

These must be some kind of well kept secret but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them, especially since they cost only a dollar or two per stick.

Overall rating: 89

You won't see me including of these in a newbie sampler, I'M KEEPING THE REST ;)

I agree with your assesment. The few that I have had all burned very well. They taste good, but not that similar to Connies IMHO. Definately need to be burried in the bottom of the cooler after getting them from JR's. They taste so much better when they aren't wet.

This sounds like my kind of cigar CC! I am definitely going to add it to my "cigars to try" list. $44.00 for a bundle of 20 is a bit more expensive than my ugly ghetto cigars, but is darn close to the $2/stick limit I try to stay at most of the time.
Like you I enjoy firm roll; its great to hear about a bargain stick that has this AND burns straight and cosistantly to boot.

Great review,
Matt

CC, thanks for the review. I thought maybe I was the only one who enjoyed those cigars. I have several different sizes but until now was concerned about "coming out of the closet" to say they are pretty good smokes. At one point JR had them for $39.00 per box. While I originally bought them for "golfgars" sometimes they are elevated to a better position.

If you like the Cuba Aliados you will also enjoy the Puros Indios. I always liked the novelty of smoking the Gran Victoria Cuba Aliados.

Good to know, I've always liked the Puros Indios and they are one of my "everyday" cigars.

I will need to keep posting reviews on dirt cheap ghetto cigars so those of you who are "in the closet" about also enjoying inexpensive cigars won't feel soo awkward "coming out".

When I am talking about how great a 50 cent cigar is you can point and laugh at "el cheapo" me while enjoying a cigar like Cuba Aliados that cost 4X the price.

Here are some of my cigarbid ghetto stogies that I hope to review soon, along with the price I paid (including shipping):

Professor Sila petite corona: 57 cents
Professor Sila sumatra diablo: 70 cents
Magellan Dominican corona: 57 cents
Flor de Filipinas corona and robusto: 50 cents
Nicarao Lanza corona: 50 cents
Don Priamo churchill: 50 cents
Hoja De Nicaragua petite: 60 cents
Don Felo petits (felitos): 24 cents
Puck Number 1: 70 cents
Free Cuba Torpedo: 70 cents
Don Macho corona: 70 cents

I don't venture below a buck very often. But there are plenty of good performers in the $1-$2 area.

I bought 4 boxes of the Professor Sila Sumatra Diablo when Cbid had their blowout sale. For 70 cents you really couldn't go wrong. The Flor de Filipinas are just plain nasty though, I bid on a bundle of 25 churchills and won at $7.00 gave them all away to the farmer down the road. ???

Good to know about the FdF. They seem very underfilled - I will have to make sure I have a strong drink to chase them with.

At least I only picked up 2 fivers at $2 each instead of the whole 25.. Strange because they are supposedly made by the folks who do double happiness and fighting cock - I enjoyed both of those years ago.

As many cheap a$$ cigars as I am buying though I am certain to end up with some dogs. I should probably figure out a way to add that to the cost of the other ones. :p
