CP's "Cigar 101" Newbie Pass 5

Alright, so here's my T's/P's:

T: Tatuaje Cojonu 2003 12.79
P: Davidoff Millennium Robusto 16.89

T: Cain Maduro 4.83
P: LFD DL-660 6.50

T: Arturo Fuente Anejo No 77
P: Padron 80th Maduro

I don't have something with rarity factor to trade for the shark, so my question would be, can price replace rarity? The Shark was around $14 dollars, and the Padron 80th Maduro is about $25. How do you guys feel about this?

That was the question, what is the rarity worth? Earlier we were talking about price to price and rarity to rarity, so I'm not sure what the proper move is. Regarding the Tat/Davidoff, I thought the point of the pass was to increase over time, is $4.10 too much?

I would think so. Keep in mind that we're just 5 or 6 people into this pass and by the time it gets to the end, most of the other guys won't have the ammo to pull off a P/T. I'm sure Greg wouldn't mind :sign: :sign:
But if a cigar doesn't have any rarity to it, I don't see any problem with the put being just a mere couple of cents more or less. Of course Greg has the gavel and final say.

I am just a newbi and didnt want to say anything but I am glad I wasnt the only one thinking this. The difference in prices seemed a bit steep and if it kept going that way by the end no one would be able to afford it!

Great discussion though!

Ok lets give these a try:

Take: #49 CAO LX2 Lancero- $6.72
Put: #56 Cain Maduro 6 x 50- $7.20

Let me know what you guy's think!

Okay, I'm confused which price to use for the Cain Maduro, when tried to average this out before I cam up with a low 7 dollars and some change. How did you get 4.83 and more so, where can I buy it from at that price  no, seriously.

Not true. As we have seen here very recently, pass for profit is not the name of the game. It was mentioned earlier that if a gift is given for the host, it should be noted in a special HOST bag, but not through the increased value of the pass. Greg is not out to make a buck, and I am sure we all know that. So the continued increase in dollar value of a pass is, IMOP, a bad thing and is not what this host intends. That said i will be the first to nominate a Host bag.

We do have to be very careful in rarity for dollars for that very reason and for the reasons above, in so much as we do not price the guys at the end out of the pass. It is not fair to them, and it is not fair to the guy right now trying to make a decent trade.

2 cents is over :D

You didn't specify which Cain Maduro you were putting.

5x50 $5.41
6x54 Torpedo $6.30
6x50 $7.20

I came up with $11.50 for the Tatuaje Cojonu.

Theoretically the pass value should be about the same as when it started. Some uptick is okay/understood but I think a $10 difference is too much. Just my two cents. :)

I got 16.39 for the Davidoff and 11.55 for the Tat.

First thing's first, I think you're going to have to re-think those two P/Ts (the Tat and the Shark). Then figure out the real cost of that Cain cigar.

Discussed ad nauseum here

Guys, remember this is a newbie pass and you want to keep the range of sticks reasonable and 'by the book', it isn't the same as a pass with a buncha guys who have done this a dozen times and herfed together as many. The thread linked above exhausts the discussion.

Honestly, I have no experience with online vendors, so when I tried pricing everything, I just use google's shopping search, found a couple of prices and averaged them out. Up to recently, all my purchases have been through two local B&M's, both whose prices are significantly higher then anything I've seen mentioned on this forum or from the online vendors (I've paid 95 dollars for a 4 pack of Davidoff Millenniums, and 32 dollars for a Padron 80th single). Concerning which Cain Maduro it was, I'm not sure, it was a take on my end, and on the front page of this thread it doesn't specify which size it it.

To the other posts regarding the Shark/Tat P/T, I went through my "stock" last night, and the only thing that comes close to comparing with those two is what I listed. That was the reason for me asking how do you deal with rarity of a cigar, if the Shark was $11 dollars on release, does an easily available $11 dollar cigar fulfill the P/T? Not to mention, an Illusione is a rarity to me, being that I have never had one, nor do I know where to purchase one.

I'm not sure if I answered everyone's questions/concerns, but if there are anymore, I will be glad to respond to them to the best of my ability. At this point, I don't think that my inventory nor experience can really match up with this pass, I'm finding it difficult to truly decipher if something is a proper P/T match, so, I'd like to take the opportunity to back out and just observe moving forward. That means Bigmanfromou, you're up.

That's what this newbie pass is for. It's a big learning experience for all of us. You don't have to bow out. If you don't have the sticks to match up with the Shark or Tat, pick another stick to take. There are plenty of cigars in the $3 to $8 range in there. Give it another go

You should use the Comparison Shopper that Greg linked to in the first post. The Cain Maduros are there as well as most others. If you can't find it there then use Google and pull prices from as many different vendors as you can. The lowest box price I could find for the Shark was $425.99 or $21.30 each at NH Cigars.

Appreciate the vote of confidence, lets try this one

Ya know, after reading the thread that insight has linked, I understand a bit more why someone would "up" some on the put for a take.

For me... since I have never participated in a pass I would like to think that the first couple would be close to MSRPs for the T/P so that I can learn. But on the other hand with what has happened here I have also learned about the rarity of cigars and how it effects what people put and take from the pass.

Now, I agree that if someone wants to place a rare cigar into the mix of a pass it should be allowed within reason. It would be awesome to be trying to find a rare cigar forever and have it show up at my door. I would be working my ass off to find a reasonable put. If I couldn't find one, well then I guess I would just have to pass on the rare cigar and go for something else.

Hopefully one day being able to find that rare cigar again.

I do think you should give it another try though Dan. The entire reason for this pass is to learn and I think there is tons of learning happening!

Good Luck!

Okay, we can work with that right there. You're on the right track. Try another one. For those of you that haven't tried that Padilla Hybrid, that's a great everyday smoke. It's cheap too. On my first couple of passes, what I did was, as soon as someone posted a P/T, I would look up the price for personal reference. That way if one of my P/Ts were vetoed, I wouldn't be stumped.

Oh god...for the first time ever I am with Los here  Please stay in the pass! Los' advice has been dead on, keep trying and looking at what is there and what you have. You mentioned Illusione. Illusione is not a rare cigar in the grand scheme though it may be to you, and you have never smoked one. Now you might have some stuff that could match that in price and you will find yourself with one hell of a good cigar.

These look good to me too. Go ahead and try one more. An Illusione is calling your name.

Alrighty then! Lots of good learnin' going on here! I likes it! We definitely want to still to the rules and keep as close as possible on trades.

Daniel, I got the below on the trade you posted, so you're definitely good on this one.

C.A.O. Brazilia Samba $5.39
La Flor Dominicana DL-660 $6.00

What else you got for us?
