Couple random questions on Boveda and cheap hygrometers

[this section deleted, it was a stupid idea] Was asking about hygros for small tupperdores, but I'm just going to do a coolidor again and use a decent hygro in it.

Second question, do Boveda packs tend to read just a bit high when brand new? I mean just opened the shipping bag and plop them in an airtight mason jar or small tupperware, virtually no time out in room air? I've calibrated the hygrometers I already have with a couple of brand new 65% bovedas, and most of them agree reading roughly 67% or so, which makes me think right out of the bag, they might be a little high, at least for a very short while. They are 'rated' at =/- 2% but that's about 3% high. Not at all worried about it, just curious if anyone else thinks they might be a tad high when brand spanking new, to see if my observation might be corroborated.

It's possible. 3% isn't a huge variance and probably close enough to the margin of error. In my experience, the easiest way to combat this issue is to throw a couple extra cigars into the humidor/tuppidor/mason jar. This usually lowers the RH a bit.

Thank you Mr. Behcet. It wasn't an "issue" to "combat". I was just wondering if anyone else felt brand-new, just opened Bovedas were a bit high or not. Once they go into a humi they won't be high for long. I was just curious, because 2-3 hygros seemed to agree.

No problem! I love Bovedas. And beads. Both are awesome, haven't gone to the drug store for PG in probably 20 years.

I find them tending to run high in truly sealed containers (e.g. tupperdor) versus a comparatively leaky wood humidor.

@rbbrock That’s exactly what I was thinking. Opened, straight into the tupper with the hygros. It’s a temporary thing.

If you're going with a cooler, I recommend RH beads. I've used them for years for long term storage in coolers, and they work flawlessly. They do a great job at absorbing/dispersing humidity to keep an even RH. And you don't need to keep replacing them. Just mist some more distilled water on them to recharge and they're good for another round.

Oh, I love me some beads. About 2 lbs in my wineador, stable as a rock. I’m just looking for a short-term solution for parking new purchases. I actually just ordered a 7L Sistema Tupperware, I think that’s the ticket.

Is Heartfelt still in the biz? Not taking orders last I looked.

Haven't bought from them in a long time, but I have used these guys in small humidors/jars/etc with great success. I use the particularly for my travel humidors.

Boveda packs work well too, however I believe they're all disposable. Check ebay, amazon, etc and you can probably find a better deal.

Yes, for home regular storage I’ve come to really love the beads. I have a blue-capped (65%) large tube in one of my humidors. They are fantastic for stable no-muss, no-fuss humi devices. PG seems so old-school now.

I recharge the Bovis.
