I was wondering if anyone stores cigars in a copper lined humidor and if you do how well it works? I have a an old humi that will hold 10 or 12 boxes that I have never used and was wondering if it was wothwhile setting up. Does the copper do anything positive or negitive to the sticks stored inside? ???

I have a beautiful one hundred year old desktop that is copper lined. I keep my favorite regular smokes in there. I don't think the copper has any effect at all. No worries.

Thank you BT for starting this thread. I've been searching the hell out of EBAY and found a bunch of vintage copper or tin lined humidors that I really want to buy.

BT, please post a pic of your copper lined humi

Here are a few I'm looking at on ebay.
Humi 1
Humi 2

I was lokking at that humi2 as well. Go for it and I won't bid on it. I was also planning on putting a few peices of dedar in mine when I get the humity up. Still waiting for my beads to arrive. I will post pics when I get a chance.

I already found another one and bid on it.

So go ahead and bid on Humi #2

I like all of your John Candy shots, when you look at that guy you just laugh.

I think a few pieces of dedar might destroy the flavor but some strips of cedar will work fine. The cedar should help stabilize the moisture so if you have beads and check regularly, it should be no problem without cedar, but an advantage with some in the humi.

Sometimes my brain goes faster then my fingers, watta ya gonna do? Thanks for the info guys.

I was surfing cable the other day and low and behold Uncle Buck is on. It's the scene where he just got the call from his brother in the middle of the night. He is getting stuff out of the closet and the bowling ball hits him on the head. ROFLMAO! Funny scene.

The thing I would worry about with copper is corrosion, that blue oxidation, and the chemical taste if it cleaned with one of those cleaners. I suspect if it were oxidized, cleaned and then washed with mild soap and water it would get rid of the chemical smell and taste. Also, if it were me I would not lay the cigars right on the copper so there was no metallic taste, but I don't know enough about it and have no experience, it would just be my preference.

There does not seem to be any corrosion on the copper. Actually it looks very good considering it is probobly old. I don't know when they stopped using copper but I would guess it was during WWII.

I can't say I smell anything inside other than a little mustiness. I think your correct about putting the cigars directly on the copper. That was not my intention I was planning on storing boxes only as the space inside is not seperated in any way. It is just a cube that is about 12"wide x 15" high x 15" deep. I thought if it holds the humidity well I could use it for long term storage.

How old is it? My concern would be the solder used to seal/ join the seams. Could it be lead based?

edited to add: If is or you think it might be lead based, it can be easily removed and resoldered.

My humi copper is nailed to the inside of the cabinet and all the edges are overlaped. I think I am going to line mine with cedar over the copper. Thanks for the idea Marc. I have the entire cabinet apart now getting ready to refinish it. I will post some pics when I get some it back together before I line it with the cedar.
