What do you guys think of this can this be sealed and then lined well enough to work for a coolidor/ big humidor I thought it was a cool idea.

Check out the pics of the old fridge I found.

Fridge closed
Fridge open
Fridge door seal

One of the things that worry me is the door seal but I am researching that now

Let me know what you think

It would be cool if you could utilize the container but you have a lot of obstacles. That kind of refrigeration does not lend it self well to constant RH and and a box with that many years of service would certainly have contaminates that would adversely affect cigars. The seal would be one of the concerns but you would be fighting an uphill battle.

Best of luck, Les

Yes I figured as much on the uphill battle just something I thought would be cool. I wasn't planning to have the refrigeration part working just use it as a large box.

It appears to be metal...and rusty at that....I would be VERY cautious or just not use it. It might spark some kind of funky mold.

I think this is a matter of time and effort.
If you were to spend the time refurbishing, I think it would be a great humi. The only problem I can see is that it's probably god-awful heavy.

You may want to use the upper section as a beer bucket for parties, of course that would need work as well to get sealed etc, but it sure would be cool!

Good luck,
Rob

Looks like a neat idea! Concerning the rust issue and the condition of the interior/exterior metal, are there any holes that the rust has created that would need fixed? Is there any exposed insulation on the inside? You could remove the cooling parts and take it to a local sandblaster and have them do a light blast on it to remove the rust and coatings then spray paint a layer or two of "kills" type rust killer then paint it what ever color you want. The door seals can be replaced with new self-adhesive type seals since they come in a lot of different widths and thicknesses.

Good luck with the project.

I wanted to do this with an antique icebox my parents had. I asked if I could have the icebox because it was just sitting in their basment stored away. My mom told me she would love to have given it to me but they gave it to a friend of theird right before I asked.

If you're willing to put in the time it would make a wonderful humidor. I've seen several of these done and they look and work great. Really nice piece when done. The door seal should be the least of your problems (replace the molding) as long as the door shuts fairly squared.

The work will be in reconditioning the box and lining it. If you line it with wood I suggest Honduran Mohagany. That much spanish cedar will be pretty strong and quite a bit more expensive. The mohagany has great absorbtion properties and works great in cabinets. I would prob insulate then line with wood myself but there's literally hundreds of ways to go about this and whichever way you go is the right one.

Good Luck!

I've seen humis made out of all kinds of things. Box in a box is my advice - go for it.

Looks like a wonderful restoration project. The corosion is minor and can be conquored with a light sanding. Use a good quality enamel when you're ready to repaint. Allofus/Kenny has some great ideas as well. I would add that the REAL challenge will be to regulate the temp - to prevent it from icing up. Keep us posted.

icing up?
I must have misread something, you're not going to actually RUN this unit right?
I thought you were just going to use it as a cool classic 'box', if you park it in your basement you'll have a good 'regulated' temperature someplace between 45 and 65 degrees year round..

Am I misunderstanding the scope of your project?
