I'm having a hard time maintaining a constant humidity of 65% in my 70 count humidor using the humidifier that came with it. I'm new at this, so any advice will be appreciated. Is there a product out there that will do this for me no matter how many cigars are in the humidor and no matter what the outside humidity is?

Dear pmj,

There is some pretty good advice by some really knowledgeabe guys on this site. Check out some of the threads on THE Humidor and I believe you will find some good suggestions. Check out the traffic on the beads. They seem to be highly recommended for your size humidor. Good luck!!!

Constant humidity is like extra money. Our collections can get to be quite valuable too. Besides the materialistic concerns, I hate worrying about the right humidity. A relatively small desktop humi most likely came with a container filled with florist's foam - that green stuff. The foam is the least expensive way to humidify and is a functional equivalent of a bowl of water, except that its harder to spill.

I advise you to get serious about your collection and install absorbent polymer crystals, or "beads". The foam will crank out water vapor until the air is saturated or it runs out of water. The beads are designed to maintain a specific RH and are available in several percentages. I use 65%. So long as the beads are charged with water, they will drive the RH in your humi to their programmed limit, but not beyond it. If the RH in the hum is above the programmed limit and the beads are not saturated, they will absorb moisture, again driving for the programmed limit. With beads, you could literally dispose of your hygrometer. They are that trustworthy.

Try Cigarmony and Heartfelt (Viper). Both are reputable vendors and can answer any other questions you have.

Thanks, Bruce. I'll contact Cigarmony and Heartfelt to check them out. One question though. Do you put the beads in some kind of sack and you just place them on top of the cigars? If this is the case, won't the cigars you place the beads on top of receive more humidity? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

For your humidor i would recomend "the puck" on cigarmony. It is a pre measured ammount that is in a container.

Well, not too stupid :sign:

Yes, you can use whatever container you want. Some guys use ladies hosiery. I use some wedding sachets I got at Hobby Lobby. Both Heartfelt and Cigarmony have containers designed to maximize the beads. It's important to allow air to circulate around the beads, but to isolate the beads from dust and contaminants. They'll last indefinitely if you don't contaminate them with foreign matter.

You also want to make sure you keep your humi at least half or 3/4 full of cigars. If you can't afford it right now, put a piece of plastic bubble wrap/bubble tube to fill up some space. I found that keeping mine more than half full and using the 65% beads is idiot proof. I never worry about it anymore.

I sense a return to the Bill Clinton thread soon... :D
