Cigars lost their aroma

Hi everyone, first time poster here.

Please forgive me if this was posted before, I really couldn't find anything on this.

I have a 100 count, glass top humidor. In fact, this is the exact one:

http://www.tobacco-barn.com/p-6515-el-pres...ar-humidor.aspx

The humidity is always around 72 - 75. Anyway, I've noticed that the cigars in the humidor don't seem to have a strong cigar smell. A couple of Cohibas don't seem to smell at all. I also have some Artuo Fuentes, Romeo y Julietas, and some random cigars. They do not seem to be dry, (I've done the pinch test, and seem fine). I've calibrated the digial hygrometer as well, and it's working fine.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

On a similar note, I bought 2 tins of Arturo Fuente mini cigars, (10 per tin), and I put them in my humidor 2 months ago. I left them sealed, meaning I left the tin sealed, just as I bought them. Well, I took them out on Saturday night for a friend's wedding, and they had a very slight bad odor, and smoked dry (they had a harsh taste). Is it possible that they humidity couldn't get to them, because the tin was sealed? I've since taken them out of the tin, and placed individualy in the humidor.

Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

First things first, Nimrod is correct. Just take a look at some of the links while you're her! ;)

Sounds to me like your cigars are dried out. What type of humidification are you using for your humi? Additionally, you might wanna take a look at your hygrometer to ensure it is calibrated.

If it is holding a humidification level steady as you say, then it can't be the seal... ??? Maybe take a look at your seal, re-calibrate your hygrometer, recharge your humidification and let your stogies rest for a while.

Welcome to CP bluenote....glad to have you aboard.

Like SD said, it sounds like you have a humidity problem. If the hygrometers are calibrated, how is the seal? Do you open the humidor a lot? Quite a few members here are not fans of glass top humis, I have one and it seems to be fine...but does require more attention to the humidity level. But, regardless, something doesn't sound right. You rolled the cigars gently between your fingers and didn't hear any slight crackling?

Pull all your cigars out of your humi and temporarily put them in a Tupperware type container with a few Boveda packs to control the situation....and leave it alone for a week or so. Now turn your attention back to your humi. When you calibrated your hygrometers, did you do a salt test or use the Boveda packs in a plastic bag? If you're not sure what I'm talking about, do a Search and learn the 'how to' and get it done right. Then turn to a more reliable method of humidification...maybe Beads may be a better and more reliable way to go.

There is a lot of good info around here, just do a little searching and you will learn a lot. Also, it is proper decorum to post a Personal Introduction before posting questions so the current members can learn a little about you....that way we can get a handle on your experience with cigars in general.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me and we can work this out to a successful ending.

Good Luck

Yep, humidity problem. Happened to me a while back when I had a case of severe f'n newbness. I'm not suggesting the same on your part, but it certainly was on my part. Thankfully, the cigars I had at the time had already lost their appeal to my taste buds. The real solution, IMO, is a cooler and beads. You'll never worry again. Unless you live in the desert.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I went ahead and posted an introduction as well.

To answer some of your questions: I did the salt test to calibrate the digital hygrometer. It was reading 78%, so I take off 3% when it's in the humidor. I do open the humidor a couple of times a week, and pinch the cigars, etc. Perhaps I'm doing that too often, and I should just let them be? Some cigars seem to have a slight crackly sound when I first pinch them, but it's very slight.

The humidity was 75% because I overfilled the humidifior. It's now down to 72%, which should be fine.

One thing I neglected to mention, is that I was messing around with these cigars a year ago with another humidor, and may have slightly dried them out. But, I thought they would be fine by now. Or perhaps the smell would never come back to the way they were?

The one thing I don't get is the Fuente cigarillos. I bought them 2 months ago, and kept the tin sealed, but now they seem dry. Could it be that I should have unwrapped the tin to begin with?

Welcome to CP! :)

I don't know how everyone else feels on this issue - but I say NEVER pinch your cigars. By doing so you are breaking up the leaves, which in turn causes the cigar to burn hotter and has an adverse effect on the flavor. In essence, that crackly sound you mention is the sound of a long filler turning into a short filler.

I don't have any answers for you regarding your humidity issues. You reported your regular level as a bit high for my liking, but then it sounds as if your hygrometer was off on the high side. The smell in my humis is consistently yummy - so I'm not sure what to say on that front either.

Being sealed shouldn't have any negative effects, but I always unwrap mine anyway. Did you smoke one and it was dry, or are you just going by touch? All my cubanitos look/feel dry, but smoke great (slowly). Leave the tin open in your humi for the next week and they'll get back to normal. Hope that helps... ???

edit to add...get RH beads and you'll never have this problem!! Welcome to CP!!!

Roll and caress them between your thumb and forefinger. Kinda like... well you get the picture. Be gentle.
As for the lack of aroma, maybe your nose is broken?!!? ;) Welcome aboard.
