Cigar wrapper cracking

Just smoked a Castle Hall by Ghurka and had an interesting thing happen.



A couple minutes into the smoke, I started to hear cracking coming from the cigar. I looked and could see that the wrapper was cracking in the middle of the cigar, between where I was holding it and where the tip was. After another 10 minutes, the wrapper was flaking off and eventually it came off completely. I finished the smoke without the wrapper.



Other than the most massive nicotine buzz of my life, the rest of the smoke was fine, minus the wrapper.



Was I the victim of a bad wrap job or did the 15 degree weather suck the moisture out of the wrapper and cause it to fall apart?

I can visualize the cause, but just can't get my hands around how to prevent or even mitigate it. It happened to me just the other night on a La Libertad Robusto I got from Wurm. It was a really nice cigar, but it just exploded about half way in and became unsmokable. I tried to lollypop it as it disintigrated to no avail.

Here's a trick that I learned from a master. Interesting discussions on this technique were also posted on two other cigar forums.

1. If you suspect the cigar is a bit dry or if you'll be smoking outside where it is colder and drier.

2. Take your cigar and quickly run it under a gentle stream of filtered water or, if your municipal water supply is good, the tap. A few seconds exposure should be sufficient.

3. Shake off, pat dry, light and smoke.

Give it a try and let me know what you think. if you're skeptical, try it with a cheap cigar first. Perhaps do a side by side comparison. Make note of any differences in flavor and burn.

That was what happened to me. Thin natural wrapper blew up in the cold. I have been smoking some Maduros in the same weather and have not had any issues.

Guess I am going to stick with maddies for the winter.
