Cigar Pairing Reviews

Here is something I have always been trying to perfect and without much luck need I say :(

A great cigar is awesome A great drink ( scotch, microbrew, coffee, etc ) is great A combination of 2 is even better ......... or is it ?

Well I guess the answer is both have to compliment each other for that magic to occur.

So here is the deal: How about I pick a premium cigar of the month and everyone pitches in with their experiences of pairing that cigar with your beverage of choice. Reviews need not be very complex. Just what was the beverage of choice, did it make a good pairing Yes or No and why.

Perhaps we kick it of with Anejo for Holidays / January as this is the season for this cigar ( And I just had one which inspired me to write this post :whistling: )

I hope this will be an interesting experience for everyone on the board, so please step on up and say what you think. AVB you have been doing Scotch, Rye, Bourbon reviews so your help and knowledge will be much appreciated.

Ok here goes nothing:

Anejo 48

1st drink. Starbucks Verona coffee blend with a dash of Vanilla Coffemate

Was not very impressed with this pairing. The smoothness on coffee and the boldness of the Anejo seemed to clash a bit

2nd drink: Macallan 12 yr old straight up

not a bad pairing as spiciness did work in my favor in both the drink and the cigar. The sweetness of the Anejo nicelly added to the flavor of the scotch but other scotch flavors very stronger than the Anejo overtones.

Well I thank everyone in advance for your input

Hey Dan,

This sounds like a pretty cool idea! This seems to be a "play along at home if you got 'em" review, right? If we get several folks who drink different accompaniments it might be pretty revealing and yield useful information.

I typically only drink water, coffee, or port with my cigars so the cigar would be the big variable.

I guess you are right Wilkey.

Perhaps this can be expanded to include what ever was the experience one chooses to post rather than limiting it to a certain cigar.

Dan,

Let me just clarify. I think this is an excellent idea. It'll be fun and imposes no particular demands on organization, getting the same cigars to tasters, the whole gemish. I like it.

For a boring guy like me, the review will always involve coffee, water, or port. So that will be my contribution to the tapestry of reviews.

I say you just let it run as is to let folks see how it'll run. It may start slowly but has good potential especially if topped whenever you review a new stick.

BTW, I'll get that hat out to you shortly.

I had a Siglo II paired with a cup of Caribbean Cut-Throat, black with one Splenda. I'm new to coffee, but this a was nice and smooth combo, and it seemed to me that each item brought out flavors in the other, if that makes any sense. I had extra time between guests this afternoon, so I built a nice fire and relaxed. No TV, no talking, just taking time to enjoy the smoke and drink.

I recently had an Anejo with a cup of Kalossi Knockout, but didn't enjoy it as much. I'd like to find a good drink combo for each type of cigar Isom, NC, wrappers, etc.). I don't have a lot in the way of Scotches yet, I'll have to work on that over the summer.

As we speak, I'm smoking a Padron Serie 1926 40th Aniversario maduro torp. with a snifter of Cointreau. I like it. But I must say that no way this stick is worth $25 to me.

Today's experiment: Bacardi Rum 4 parts Kahlua 1 part on the rocks
and Partagas Serie D # 4

Not bad although the drink would probably work better with Anejo go figure well I will smoke the second half with Macalans and update this post.

Now this is a great Combo !!! by the way its the 12 Yr old Macalan

I tried a U. Upmann Mag 46 with some Hungarian desert wine, Tokaji (pronounced toky) a few weeks ago. I highly recommend this combo!
I look forward to pairing more cigars with Tokaji!
Tokaji has a heavy apricot character!
In my opinion it blows Port away!
Tonight I smoked a Davidoff 100th anni Robusto with some Lagavulin. Quite nice but I maybe some Tokaji would have been better!

I had a LFD Serie 2000 Toro along with a glass of The Glennlivet 18 y/o about a week ago. The LFD is my favorite smoke, but the first draw after a taste of the scotch left me with "damn, I can't taste the cigar at all now." I was at first disappointed. BUT, after finish of the scotch deminished, the next draw of the smoke was great. This made for a very enjoyable smoke....after I got my timing down.

I stumbled on a great combination quite by accident. Sam Adams Holiday Porter and an AF Opus X Power Ranger. They seem to compliment one another. I've never been a big fan of beer with my cigars, but this one is quite nice. A heavy bodied brew and cigar.

I am digging this thread! I am boring because I usually pair with coffe, club soda and occasional port and guiness; and very rarely a single malt.

Dan, Since you came up with this thread. How about giving me a beverage (with alcohol preferably) and I'll send you a cigar from my stash to pair with ;)

:whistling: :whistling:

x2, this is an excellent idea Dan.

I always smoke with a beverage, and usually smoke with a coffee drink, scotch, water, or root beer, so I am enjoying hearing about what else different people think of to smoke with. I.e. a snifter of Cointreau. I have a bottle at home, and am going to have to give that a try!

Crazy as it may seem I never tried pairing with port before, always thought the drink might be too sweet for a cigar. But I do have a Taylor Fladgate 20yr old that I am willing to experiment with :p

Great! Give me a couple of days to get the cigar(s) squared away. Let them rest for at least 4 weeks and give us your review.

I already have a few things in mind :whistling: --just trying narrow it down to what I think are worthy of a 20 y.o. port

I have tried Coke Blak with cigars before and it was an interesting experience.

May want to give it a try sometime. Blak is a coffee flavored soda thing put out by Coke.

I can't drink alcohol so I'm always experimenting with other types of drinks. I found that a Punch Gran Puro goes well with a blend of second flush Assam tea mixed with Kenyan grown tea, no milk or sugar.

Some brands of Irish breakfast teas will have this combination of leaves if you can't find them anywhere.

I ain't drinkin' nothin' that's discribed as second flush :0
