When I cut my cigars, sometimes the cap stays in one piece and sometimes the tobacco falls out of the cap and crumbles. I dont notice any difference in the way the cigars smoke, but I want to know why the cap stay whole sometimes with all the tobacco staying in the cap and sometimes the tobacco "explodes" into pieces. When it does this is it too dry? Does anybody else have this problem? Is it anything I should be concerned about?
Thanks

Really it just depends. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesnt. Most of the time I smoke Fuentes and it seems like about maybe about 1/3 of the time this happens. I only smoke one or two cigars a week but I havent noticed what cigars it happens with or if it doesnt happen with certain ones. I know I have never had this problem with DCs. The cigars seem to smoke fine and the tobacco doesnt come out of the cigar, just the cap. Do I need to cut farther down on the cigar?

What is the humidity level in your humidor? Also, how old is your cutter? When you cut your cigar, how far down do you cut; just below the cap? My best guess would be your cigars are too dry and/or your cutter is too dull.

As with anything that is hand made there will be some imperfections and differences within each cigar. Better cigars will reduce or eliminate these imperfections. As mentioned above you could have a dull cutter. It may be how you hold the cutter. Dry cigars tend to so this as well. If you smoke short fills then this could be the reason too. Unless the cap completely falls apart I would not worry about it.

How much glue is used on the cap could play a factor. The tobacco sticks to that, keeping the cap in one piece. That would all depend on the roller.
