Cigar Caddie

I bought a cigar caddie and some humidification fluid. I get home and realize that I did not get any directions. Can anyone tell me how much of the humidification fluid I should use and how often I need to add more? Any thing else I need to know about caddies? FYI-I bought the 5 capacity caddie.

Is there just a piece of foam in the lid? Just get it wet. When it looks dry, wet it again. You don't want to drip is the only thing to watch for. Don't make it too difficult. :)

I don't have one. But assuming it is airtight, and you want to use the supplied humidifier, I would suggest using a pg solution. I personally would get a 65% Boveda Humidipak. Assuming this is a ready to smoke sort of endeavor.

No there is a disk on the top that is supposed to handle the humidification. Here is what I have:

You can see the disk I am referring to in one of the pictures. Just not sure how much hudification solution I need and how often.

Get it wet, but not dripping. When it looks dry, get it wet again. [Insert some joke about wife/girlfriend here]

It will not take much to saturate that little disc.
Perhaps more than you would think, as Floral Foam does hold alot of liquid, but certainly not more in volume that itself.
Just compare the size to whatever you are using to apply the water, and see. After you saturate it, you'll reach a point where it stops absorbing. Then let it sit, with the foam side down, to let any drain off happen. Otherwise, if you put it in with cigars, it might drain on them.

John mentioned wetting it again. The next day, take it out, and see if it will take any more fluid. I do not know if all that packing foam absorbs/holds any moisture. If it did, I would certainly check with a hygrometer.

Here's the deal, you will have to maintain that little box at the target humidity, if you are picky, and if you want it always ready at that humidity. Putting cigars in it may raise or lower the humidity, depending on thier moisture content. After you futz around with it a while, you'll get a feel on how much water to add for maintenance.

I wouldn't even bother with it. I'm not sure how long you plan on keeping cigars in the case, but if it's only just to carry around, you'd be fine as is. I have a 15 ct traveldor, and the only time I ever do anything for humidity is if I'm taking it somewhere for more than a weekend.

Man I need a humidor.

Thanks for the info. I will keep an eye on it for a while.

Sadly, that was going to be my storage for a while. I am not an everyday or every week smoker. I might be if I could find a damn place to smoke! Tough to find a couple of hours to enjoy a cigar with wife and kids. I digress. I was hoping to use it more longterm for the 4-5 smokes I usually keep on hand.

I am not leaning towards a 100-150 qty. humidor. That way I can season some smokes (learned something already!) for the occasional time I can actually smoke one. The cigar caddie will then be relegated to what it was meant for-traveling.

I just bought a 15 count Cigar Caddy a month ago specifically for our Christmas trip to Houston and learned the following:

-The Cigar Caddy is airtight. However, if you open it frequently to fill with smokes or take them out, you will lose a significant amount of humidity and may need to refill the humidifier weekly.

-If you do not fill the CC to it's capacity with smokes, they will move around a lot. Either fill it to capacity or fill the voids with similar packing foam.

-Filling the humidifier is easy, just follow the advice of the previous posts. Remember to fill slowly.

I tested the effectiveness of the CC humidifier and seal using a remote weather station sensor and left it in the CC for three days. My findings were that under the conditions in which it was tested (within a residence, ~39% RH, ~67F, with 10 cigars), maintained a steady 65% RH, until it was opened or experienced a drastic change in temperature. I was generally pleased with the results.

Be careful using that foam piece for long term storage, they like to create moldy situations in Caddies. I suggest buying a cigar sized tube of beads from one of our resident vendors or a boveda pack and using that as your humidity source.

If you have no humidor I'd suggest investing in some beads and tupperware. As for the Caddy I have a tube of beads from Heartfelt that I toss in there (they're about the size of a cigar, see the web site) if I'm going away for a week or two. If you're just going out for the day or a weekend I wouldn't even worry about it unless you're camping in the desert or something.

The beads seem very popular. Anyone know a thread on where I can learn more about the beads? I went to heartfelt's site and it looks like they have cases, squeeze bottles, cases, tubes, etc. Not sure where to begin with those.

I've got a 15 count Caddie, and just use a 65% Boveda pack in it. I've had the same pack in it for at least 6-7 months now.

Depends what you need. The tubes are great for caddies. If you're looking at a humi buy a 1/2 lb or 1 lb and some mesh bags or use nylons. Lots of people have different ways of wetting the beads, do some searches and you'll find lots of info on the different products and ways of setting up humis.

I got a 5 cigar caddy for xmas from my girl..Great gift...I just put distilled water every couple of days works, great that way...alway yeah you should get a humidor something small 50 ct to start with..that way you can stock upon your favs...As for me i am doing the same thing newbie to cigars and love it...I take my caddy every where i go now...You just never know when you want to smoke one..

I've got a 15 count Caddie, and just use a 65% Boveda pack  in it. I've had the same pack in it for at least 6-7 months now.

Ding, Ding, Ding.......

Simple, easy and consistent. Set & forget... This is the "keep it simple, stupid" ;) method that always works.
You don't turn your 15 count into a 14 count or your 5 into a 4. :0

Use 2!

Are all beads the same or are heartfelt better? I am placing an order to cheap humidors and they have these:

Yep. Right answer.

In my 15 count, if it's going to be used for a day or two, I've always just put a few drops of distilled water on the little pad and called it good.

For longer storage, I use a Bovida 65% pack. No mess, no fuss, no worries, and no taking up valuable space with a tube of beads.

Don't get me wrong, beads are THE BEST for bigger spaces (I have several socks in my cabinet) but the slim little Bovida pack seems like it was made for this.
