Some cigars just let you know they will really be something right out of the gate. This little baby is no exception.
Type/Style: Cuban Perfecto
Wrapper: USA/Conn. Shade...Maduro
Filler: Dominican
Binder: Dominican
Size: 4 7/8 x 60
MSRP: $7.35
Smoke Time: Hour and fifteen minutes (Roughly)
My local B&M had some of these sent to them on Friday. When I went in today, the owner was telling me about some cigar he had never seen, or heard of before. I shook my head at him ruefully when he showed me the box of Work Of Art Maduros. "Are they good" he asked? Should have told him they were absolute crap, and figured out a way to come up with the money for the box. Instead, I told him what a nice little treat they are, like the Anejo around Christmas time.
He sold me two, well over MSRP (fugger), and I could not wait until I could get home and see what the recent 2007 production was like.
The WOAM that was picked to smoke was something to see. I really love the Perfecto shape. I've read that no one was making these anymore, until Fuente revived it back in the eighties. Until then, it was a lost art. Just looking at this makes me think it is not something very easy to make.
The wrapper had some tooth noted, with little light colored specks peeking out all over the dark wrapper.
The smell reminds me of Tobacco and Red Wine.
The prelight draw was not a let down, and I can hardly wait to get down to buisness. After toasting the foot, lighting, and taking my first few draws, my taste buds were rewarded with rich tobacco flavors. The smoke that came out was thick and grayish blue.
The taste that came from this specimen, reminded me of Bakers Chocolate minus the bitter aftertaste. Also noted was coffee and molasses. The Smoke was cool, and the flavors were consistent throughout the entire cigar. The burn was a little off at first, but auto corrected after the first five minutes. I did have to do a few re-lights as well, that may just be from not being settled. Here's to wishing that I had the money and connections to stash a box of these.
My overall impression is that the 2007 production is a very good product. I'm thinking they will really be something to behold after three years of aging, if you can wait that long. If you can find them, get them.
