Choosing My First Humidor

Hey Yall,

I am currently deciding between two different humidors to buy. As I said in the topic title this will be my first. I have been looking between a standard, cedar lined box and a cigar caddy travel humidor. Both are the right price I am just curious as to which one would be best suited for a newb as far as; set-up, durability, and overall quality. I know if i purchase the wooden style I will also be getting some beads to go along with it, a little added security. Thanks to everyone for being so helpful and for contributting to a great site.

both sound to small especially the travel humidor. Cedar humidors are great and everyone should have on to have one, but if you're gonna get into this site you will need a lot more room. i.e. a coolador.

It sound like you don't want to spend a lot of money. i set up my 60 qt coolador for around $50. might be a better bet for you if you are serious about getting in to the hobby. Just so you know i started with a small 50 count humidor and when i joined here i bought a 300 count and filled it in 2 months. so i got the coolador and it is half full and i have only been here just shy of 3 months.

Ps if you want bigger then 60 qt it isn't much of a difference in price. the digital hydrometer and pound of beads would be the same just the difference in cooler price. for me the 60 qt cube fit in the space i had. if you do decide to do the coolardor let me know and we can give you a deal on some beads.

I am not ready for a coolador yet because I am still a newb. But my advice would be if you are going for a desktop then go a little bit bigger then you think you need. Trust me on this. I am on my third humi. Thank god they were all gifts!! :) Are there any that you are looking at in particular?

I know right now i'm not quite ready for the coolador yet. I'm looking at a small 15-20 cigar cherry/spanish cedar humi. Right now I think i'm gonna go with that. I'm hoping that here with in the next year or so I will be ready for the coolador that way I can pass this humi on to a friend that is also starting the hobby now. Thanks to all for the quick replies, they have certainly come in handy!

Or you can try the newest craze to hit the cigar storage options. I think it's gonna stick!

The Stove-a-dor!!!

Sheesh^^^^^^^

Without even reading your post, the best advice anyone will/can give you is to go much bigger than what you are thinking... Seriously. Since August I have filled a 50 count, then a 200 count, a 28 bottle Vinotemp, and now I bought a Humidor Vault.

If money is the issue, don't think and buy a cooler. It may not be pretty but you wont regret it. Oh and buy Heartfelt beads............................... You'll never look back.

It's like this, Jeremy---say you go ahead and buy a 20-count desktop. Maybe spend $30-50 on the box, plus beads and gauge.

Now, that 20-count will only really hold about a dozen cigars. They use petite coronas for those capacity estimates, most of the time.

So there you are with a box that'll only hold a dozen cigars, and you buy a stick here, a stick there, maybe a fiver or a sampler off C-Bid. And there you are, eight or nine cigars in the box, and you try a cigar you really, REALLY like . . . and then you see a deal on a whole box of 'em that's just too good to pass up.

Where ya gonna put 'em?

Trust me . . . it DOES happen like that. To everyone. :whistling:

Heed their warnings. Since NOVEMBER I have filled a 100ct humidor. I started to use the playmate elite cooler for overflow. Well damn if that isn't full now. Now I have a frickin 28 bottle Vinotemp sitting in my living room, waiting to be unboxed.

If I fill that Vino this year, I'm going to go to rehab of some sort. Is there even a cigar collectors rehab?!

p.s. the stove-a-dor is funny as hell!

Really, listen to what everyone is saying. I ordered a 12 count humi just for some loose cigars I had laying around then had to get a 25 ct now I've got several in a tupperdor thingy in a big plastic bag with my other 2 humis which are full (humidity issues with the winter and furnace) and have already asked the wife for a 300ct or better for Valentine's (I've given her very percise info so hopefully it'll be a good one - fingers crossed). And I started in October - in Canada where our prices are 3 -4 xs that of yours, I can't imagine how many I'd have if I was in the States.

The thing to remember is that by the time you put a humidifier either on the top or a gel jar or beads in the humidor along with a digital hygro on the top or the bottom, it eats up a lot of actual real estate and on the smaller ones, 15 or 25, your actual useful area is perhaps only 1/2 to 2/3's of what you think you should be able to store.

Well after reading everyone's posts I do believe I will be making a coolidor. I may still get a small humi for my favorites and/or to travel with. Once again thanks to everyone for the great advice, it is certainly appreciated!

Northernmorris speaks the truth. Go MUCH bigger than what you think you need, as you will catch up, or grow into your humi. I have bought two humis in the last 4 months, and now I need to upgrade again, even though my newest is one month old

You will not regret going Coolidor instead of Humidor.

One: It's probably going to be cheaper than a nice 50-100ct humidor.
Two: It's big enough for your first year cigar smoking..............can't say about the second year though.
Three: It comes in different colors to match your personality. :p

I just set up my first coolerdor and my cooler is black. What does that say about me I wonder? ???

Definitely go for a coolerdor. I went from a 70 stick, then bought an additional 300 stick humidor, and now have a coolerdor. All within 8 months of joining this place.
