seems like alderman smith wants to try again to stop smoking in public places. the restaurant association is gearing up for the upcoming fight, saw on tv that even mayor daley is'nt to crazy about the new attempt to push thru the legislation. i called the people i know to fight this thing, if you can, get involved and make some calls. tia!

i was reading it this a.m. in the paper.
sucks if it ever passes..luckily the mayor is opposed to this..So there is still hope..

Smith keeps this up and Mike Ditka's going to tear his head off and spit down his neck! :whistling:

 saw ditka on fox news and he was'nt happy, boy hate to get in his way. anyway between him and the restaurant asso. they seem to have backed off the smoke nazis, now they want to compromise and have smoking after 9pm till closing, better then what they wanted which would have been the strongest anti smoking laws in the nation. also mayor daley is with the asso.

They are writing a compromise.

The bottom line.. $$$$$$$$$$$$$

They are going to probably allow owners to purchase a SMOKING PERMIT..for a nominal fee which is re0newable annually.

SO much for doing it for the health of ppl.. I t always bolis down to greedy gov't wanting more .

BASTIDS!!

Hopefully this does not go thru and ppl are allowed to run their business the way they seem fit.

I met Ditka in his restaurant a few weeks ago...Big Man! Very nice but you can just feel the intensity he has, pretty amazing.

I just want to ask the question, why is it that we need/require/demand that the government make our own choices for us? The statement has been made that it isn't fair to expose bartenders, watresses etc. to second hand smoke. this proposal assumes in part that these employees are not capable, or not willing to make their own choices regarding their own work environment and need the government to protect them. I say, if you wish to work in a smoke free environment, find a smoke free restaurant to work in or enter a new line of employment. This also applies to patrons seeking a smoke free environment.

The owners of these establishments have invested their time, money, sweat, blood and futures in them, they should be allowed to manage them as they see fit. I guarantee that if the owner's profits begin to sag because the public refuses to frequent their smoke friendly establishment, the owners will inact their own smoking ban in order to protect their investment.

If left to the government, business's will fail, people will loose jobs and the public will be denied any choice in the matter.

this i can agree on, we as a people are starting to lose our freedom to pursue happiness with out government intervention!

This is a big sore spot for me. There is an organization called Smoke Free Charlotte that is pushing it here. Luckily, our city council struck it down as did the state, but the crazies are still lobbying for legislation. They were also seeking some ridiculous tobacco tax hike - something like 500% increase or something. That failed as well.

I just don't get it. If there was that much demand for smoke free restaurants, then there would be more of them. Plain and simple.

And for the bartenders and waiters who say it's not fair that they can't get away from it at work ... get off your ass and get a new fuggin job.

OK - thats the end of my rant

edited because I can't spell tonight

Since the stae of Illinois collected just over $914,000,000 in tobacco taxes in 2004, I;ve asked a few Chicago Aldermen what the plan was to replace those taxes...talk about a bunch of dumbasses!!
