On the sound advice of a couple of wise members here at CP, I decided to smoke a cigar I had been saving for a special occasion. I have a steady job, a beautiful and loving family and woke up breathing this morning so what else to do other than celebrate those wonderful facts? I received this Royal Corona in a trade with a generous BOTL here at CP.
Setting
This is a picture of my work one year ago Wednesday:
We are in the midst of rebuilding and some of the construction workers needed to work today so our sales staff took turns manning the gate and I drew first watch. From a safe distance and in the designated smoking section, I decided to enjoy this Bolivar.
This picture was taken this morning and shows a much better view of our facility:
Prelight
Inspection of this beautiful stick revealed a luscious, caramel-colored wrapper with no visible inperfections. The triple cap was removed and the prelight draw at cold was a full blast of tobacco and spice. I am a huge fan of the Bolivar PC and the BBF and had never had the Royal Corona offering from Bolivar so I was anxious to put fire to this cigar.
First Third
Upon lighting, I was met with an immediately recognizeable Bolivar blast of vanilla bean, spice, leather and tobacco. The flavors were much more pronounced than in the PC and were much stronger than in the BBF but it was never overpowering. In my limited foray into cigars from this region, I have found Bolivar to be most to my liking and this RC was starting out with high marks. The ash fell off after about 1 inch while I was walking around but the burn remained straight and true. Coupled with a strong cup of black coffee, this morning was shaping up nicely.
Half Way
The initial flavors are all still there and are remaining a wonderful blend with no one flavor taking over the others. The ash is holding strong and the burn continues to be just shy of razor sharp. The aroma this Bolivar is giving off is nothing short of amazing and several of the contractors entering the gate comment about it.
Final Third
I have learned to take my time and "sip" this cigar as the flavors can be harsh when rushed. I find that the cooler I let it get inbetween draws the happier my tounge is. The ash held on for about 2-3" until I had a draw problem so I ashed it and the cigar drew again like a champ. The flavors remained strong and in harmony with one another down to the nub. Smoke time was about 1 hour and 25 minutes with no relights, minimal draw issues and a true burn.
Summation
This little soldier gave it's all until I sadly tossed the last 1/2". I know these are not the most expensive offerings from the region but I would definitely put it next to the RASS without any reservations. If you find yourself liking the Bolivar profile, do yourself a favor and try these. Every day is a celebration, so go smoke a good one!!!!
