My boss's 20th year of service in the US Army is coming up and he wants to buy a box of celebration cigars and has turned to me to recommend something. He smokes about six cigars a year and seemed to really enjoy the Acid Kuba Kuba I gave him but wasn't able to finish the Oliva Serie V torpedo I'd sold him. He said it made him pretty sick.

So with that background, what you all recommend for a flavorful but non-spicy/peppery, non-bitter, non-nicotine bomb cigar that is of high quality construction and $5 to $10 a stick by the box? I was going to recommend La Aroma De Cuba as a cigar that would really fit the bill, being both cheap as well as balanced and pleasant in addition to visually attractive. However the floor is open for recommendations. He'd prefer a longerish cigar, as celebration cigars tend to be Churchills.

The first cigar that came to mind when I read this was the Cusano 18 Double Connecticut. Its rich, creamy,
very flavorful, not spicy or peppery at all, and a very well-constructed cigar. In fact, I gave one to a friend of mine just last week who claimed he didn't enjoy cigars for the very same reason - they were nicotine bombs that made him feel sick. Well, he had the Cusano 18 and LOVED it and now he's a convert. I tend to lean to to a more full-bodied cigar but I revisit the Cusano 18 from time to time when I want something mild and pleasant to kick back with in the morning with a cup of coffee. The cigar comes in churchill size and goes for $5- $6 a pop. LINK

My recommendation for a mild cigar at your price point would be the Oliva Serie G. It comes in a Churchill size. No nicotine hit in my experience...mild, but still flavorful.

Any thoughts on the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990? I've had the 1992 which reminded me of a german chocolate cake but never the 1990 and its in the price range, $6-9 depending on which size. The Vintage 1990 has the added cheesy benefit of 1990 being the year my boss entered the service so it might be a good choice, unless the flavors don't meet the profile he'd enjoy, that is...

The RP Vintage 1990 is actually one of tow RPs that I have actually liked. For what it's worth...I personally prefer the 1990 over the 1992.

I agree with BBS. Go with the Padron 3000's.

Good deal. Thanks for the recommendation guys. Its my boss' decision but I'll see if I can't steer him that way. He smoked a RP 1990 Vintage and found it a bit strong though pretty good so based on my experience with Padrons it sounds like we have a winner.
