So Woman and I have decided that it is finally time to trade in the starter set hand-me-downs and get a new set of irons. I was fitted yesterday and Woman is getting fitted this coming saturday. we shoot about 100-110 on the course and have been told that we should look for a set of irons which have a cavity back which is supposed to be more forgiving. I was told that the new Ping G5's would suit me well, but i want to also look at some comparible models. In searching on this site and on the 'Net, i did not see any clubs described as cavety back so i was hoping some of you guys could tell me some of the different model lines to consider/compare. It would be great to know what you also thought of them as well. Thanks for your input and wisdom.
Jon.

My current set is Cobra S9 irons with Titlest Vokey wedges. Got them fitted 2yrs ago and I LOVE them. By the way Cobra is made by Titlest.

I'm using a beginners cavity back set from a company called Confidence. Just make sure to get the set you buy custom fitted to YOU! A $200 custom fit set will do you more good than a $900 off the shelf set.

Ping G10 are very nice.

I play some Mizuno with few years on them. I will porbably check clubs out again next year.

Go to a store and take a couple(usually 6 ot 7 iron) out to 'demo'.
Not in the store on a mat. Go to an outdoor grass range and also try out the wedge at a shipping area.

See how they 'feel'. Try a few brands and models. Once you decide on the clubs, check out deals online and even USED clean ones on ebay.

THEN...get them suited to your swing...toe up or down...if you don't know what that means...do a little reaserch or ask.

Now...you can get a 'fitting'...how long the clubs need to be and/or the toe up or down thingy!
(looks like you did some of that already)

Cavity back is basically perimeter weighted and maybe offest....they are 'game' enhancing' clubs.

Now...if you plan on taking the time and to get lessons and wind up changing your swing...then wait until you practice with the change. Then get clubs.

I went for a new set last summer...instead I got my current clubs 'adjusted'(toe up 2degrees plus 1.5") and it helped to match my swing....best thing I ever did with clubs.

Also, demo some hybrids. The set you get should probably on go from 5 iron to wedge....and two hybrids.

The hybrids in and ove themselves should help your game.

Happy hunting.

Hopefully, THIS will help.

The cavity back makes for a larger sweet spot and therefore more forgiveness, but keep this in mind, the shaft determines 90%-95% of the performance of any golf club. The difference between a cavity back (the most forgiving) and a blade (the least forgiving) is minimal at best unless you can make the exact same swing every time.

You have heard some good advice about getting fitted and trying out the clubs, if possible, first.

Learn the triviality of distance and the critical importance of the short game (scoring) and the game becomes more fun.

Good luck, play well!

All very good advice, can't say it enough there is no substitute for a good fitting set of clubs.

BTW I am currently gaming the g5's and love them.

Good Luck...

Taylormade Burner XD irons are very nice and can be had pretty cheap now. A guy in our regular foursome plays them. They have a titanium face, and are so easy to hit it is almost like cheating!!
Give them a look
Burner XD

I also play the G5's. Nice irons. Very forgiving yet still workable. Can't go wrong with PING, and yes, make SURE to get a good fitting job on whatever you go with.

Good luck.

I am still playing the PING i3-O- Size and I love them. I have had them for 7 years and I cannot see myself getting rid of them anytime soon.

If I did I would go for another set of PINGS. You cannot beat the fitting, customer service, etc.

Ping G-10's it is, after a long day of three different stores and club fitting and hitting golf balls and more golf balls.

...Go to an outdoor grass range and also try out the wedge at a shipping area...

Do you prefer Fedex or UPS for testing wedges, Gary? :sign:

I agree with Gary's thoughts. Demo a few clubs, take them back and demo a few more. This is what I did before settling on the Callaway Big Bertha irons and I love 'em.

+1 for trying them first to make sure you like them. I had a set of Nike Sumo iron's and went last week to Golf Galaxy to hit the new Victory Red Irons. Loved the way they felt so much I ended up snagging a great deal on a new set off ebay.
