Well, I finally couldn't take it anymore. My roommate went to Vegas last month, and per my request picked up two of these so that myself and Shant (aka LA Kings Fan) could try out something new and slightly exotic. We had been really eager to try these, but had refrained until now, as we had been waiting for a nice day with plenty of time to slowly indulge. Today was that day, and so we grabbed the cigars, tools of destruction, a few drinks and headed outside to the backyard.

My initial inspection revealed a cigar of superb construction, featuring a wrapper with light oils, light veins, and a soft, supple feel to it. I found no hard or soft spots along the length, from the well bunched foot all the way to the perfect cap, and so I had high hopes that the draw would be spot on. I sniffed the wrapper, and was very surprised at the overwhelming smell of barnyard coming off of it, as well as a sharp sweetness to it that reminded me of cinnamon sticks. I punched the cap, and found the cold draw to be perfect, and it carried on it the same cinnamon sweetness. The odd thing was, the wrapper left a sweetness on the lips that reminded me of brown sugar, yet I knew this didn't have a sweetened tip. I toasted the foot until it was evenly lit, then took a couple quick puffs to get the burn going strong. I was surprised at how quick the burn was on this, as just with the lighting it was already almost a quarter inch into the cigar. My first tasting draw revealed a strong cinnamon sweetness, strong tobacco, and a very heavy black pepper taste on the finish. This black pepper spice also burned the nostrils nicely when exhaled through the nose, which wasn't unpleasant, but it wasn't the kind of pepper I was used to from say, a Tatuaje Miami. At this point I was hopeful that this cigar was going to turn into a delightful smoke, but alas it was not so. The cinnamon left after about a quarter inch in, and I found only a straightforward tobacco flavor. I smoked the cigar halfway down with absolutely zero changes in taste, and was slightly irritated at the fact that the ash pretty much fell apart every quarter inch, dumping a hail of ash particulate all over my shirt and lap. Once I reached the halfway point, I started tasting the unpleasant flavor of ammonia, which leads me to believe that this cigar was definitely in a sick period. Shant concurred, as he was experiencing the same thing. I let it die just past the halfway point, as did Shant. I really, really wanted to like this cigar, but it just wasn't happening, which is unfortunate. I'll be getting a couple more, as I feel that if I just hide them in the humidor for a year or two, I am sure they will be great smokes. Oh well, you can't win 'em all!

Nice review, sad it was a disappointment. I think picking up a few to let rest for a few months before trying them again could help. I've had similar experiences with sticks I had high hopes for. Revisiting them a few months later made a giant difference. Hopefully you can score a few more to let rest.

I picked some up in Jan. 08 and now they smoke very well! Not sure when that happened as I try to not go for them. So what Dave said makes a lot of sense.

Good, honest review Charles. I envy your sense of taste and smell. I have 2 stages, good tobacco, and even better tobacco :sign: but I'm a patient man so I'll keep waiting till my dog rockets turn around.
