Casa Fuente
Origin: Dominican Republic
Size: 7 x 47
Vitola: Churchill
Wrapper: Cameroon
Filler: Opus X with some modifications (rumored)
Smoke Time: 1 hour 40 minutes
Look and feel: 87
Flavor and Aroma: 92
Burn: 93
My rating: 91
I purchased this cigar when I visited Casa Fuente in Las Vegas for the Big Smoke. I probably should have looked at the cigar a bit better as there was some minor damage to the wrapper. It appears to have been repaired at the factory, because there was a split in the wrapper. There was also a small tear in the wrapper as well, however, this didn’t effect the quality of the cigar. That is the only reason I rated this cigar an 87 for the look and feel. Had the cigar had no imperfections, this would have been a 92 or 93 rated cigar.
The color is a beautiful Cameroon with some subtle reddish hints. The veins are very minor except for one fairly large vein, but its still comfortable to the touch and doesn’t disrupt the burn in any way. There is a light sheen to the smoke. Other than the split in the wrapper it is perfect with a beautiful triple cap.
The perfect prelight draw is sweet with a hint of citrus that is similar to a Opus X Fuente Fuente. Upon lighting the cigar the first flavors are all spice and tobacco. However, within the first half inch these flavors have subsided into a lightly sweet with generous woodsy feel. I believe that at first the pairing with the cigar, Glenfiddich 21yr Gran Reserva – Cuban rum Finish was definitely modifying the flavors as it began with a medium body.
Into the second third, however, the smoke really picked up power and moved well into a full flavored smoke. The woodsy flavors have leaned towards an oakiness with a sweet caramel finish. At this point the pairing between the dram and smoke is ideal. They both compliment each other; however, have distinct personalities that made this a wonderful evening on the patio. By the end of the 2/3 all the flavors have become polished and this cigar is a very well balanced full bodied smoke. The aromas from the smoke of this cigar are definitely a huge part in my review. The smoke was very aromatic and hearty on the nose. These wonderful scents turned a good cigar into a stunning smoke.
The last third has picked up flavors of creamy cashew nuts and cedar with a light cocoa finish. Towards the end of the last third the spice picked back up and is now a light sting on the back of the palette that reminds me of the heat from a nice red pepper flake. At the last inch the smoke begins to get hot and I set it down.
All in all, this cigar was an end to a perfect evening. The pairing of the Gran Reserva was absolutely perfect. Please try this smoke, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a shame that it retails in the mid $20 range and puts it out of contention for a go-to smoke.
Thanks
