A buddy an I paused for a short while this afternoon and smoked a CAO Black Ltd. Gothic which was part of a CAO Conmemorativo Ltd. Edition Sampler box OF 7 (the one with the Seed to Soul DVD documentary).
Weather conditions: sunny with high clouds blocking enough sun to keep us cool
Temp: 91 degrees Fahrenheit
Ambient RH: 11%
Wind: 8mph from the southwest
Drink: lemon iced tea
Construction/Appearance: the CAO Black torpedo was a nicely constructed cigar, an even shade of medium brown, very light veins one small crack in the wrapper at the tip due to handling (my fault).
Clipped with cigar scissors 1/2 inch down from the tip, pre-lit draw was ever so slightly tighter than perfect, no remarkable flavors other than tobacco.
Lit with a two tip butane torch using the pre-charr and rotated once while lighting.
First Third: This cigar started out with a moderate spicy/peppery flavor and a single bitter leathery note that didn't subside until well after the first ashing. It was a dissapointing first third, altogether; one dimensional and rather tough to get through. The ash held solid the entire first third but I gently knocked it off after about 1.25" since I've been dumping a lot of ash on my lap recently. The smoke was thin and slightly pungent.
Second Third: It wasn't until the middle of the second third that the cigar mellowed out, the peppery/spiciness tapered off and the cigar became much much more enjoyable. The leatheryness began to give way to a well balanced wood with a hint of sweetness and a nice aroma that reminded me of burnt sugar. The smoke adopted a bit more fullness as well.
Final Third: Towards the end the spice had completely dissapeared and the cigar was very enjoyable. A smoother creaminess prevailed along with subtle wood and a well balanced sweetgrass note that really made the nub shine. The smoke continued to get fuller and remained very plesant with a perfect burn.
Overall, this is a good cigar but not one which I'd purchase by the box; that first third was too rough for the rest of the cigar to forgive.
K.M. score: 3.5/5
Sorry, no pictures; I work in a secure area where electronics are not permitted so I don't bring my camera or cell phone to work.
