This is an odd duck, stronger flavored than I'd expected, and not the most professionally made of all booze I've tasted..

there's a hard whiff of wood alcohol on the nose, and it has a faint scorched taste that indicates they cooked it a bit fast..

both of those bespeak commercial 'hurrying' sort of production methods, no matter what kind of still they used..

So, first impression is 'it could have been better than it is' ..

And just UNDER that.. this is some Real Good Booze.. with flaws, to be sure, and they are Serious flaws, that might make some people pour it out. .. but this is REAL good booze.. and even a flaw or two can't ruin it.

It was made as a blending whisky, has a Helluva Punch to it for 45% alcohol, is R*Y*E in capital letters.. I don't think it's recommendable to most folks. It's a curiosity, a blending whisky that escaped into a bottle all by itself..

DANG this is good booze. I don't think most folks would like it, and I'd like to make him do it over, and SLOW DOWN.. but if all you had to drink was this stuff, you'ld manage to stand it.

Course, I LIKE rye. If you would rather have an interesting rye than a mellow bourbon or 'another ordinary scotch' .. this is interesting. It's not ordinary by any means.. but don't expect a perfect gem.

You won't be serving THIS one to your sensitive guests.. but if someone wanted to know what old Prohibition era rye whisky tasted like, this would be the one I'd point em at. It REEKS of 'old school, primitive'..

If you have Lagavulin, Wild Turkey 101, and Ouzo in your collection, and enjoy em all.. Buy Lot 40. It has a STRONG taste, a long finish, a fine flavor and a lousy nose. Leave the brandy snifter in the cabinet. This is shotglass booze..

Edit: Next Morning.. :) I noticed *NO* excessive evaporation, which is a good sign for the collection, and a Bad sign for any rapid purchase of another bottle. I'd buy another.. when this one has a smidgen left in it.. about 2008..

If anyone absolutely LOVES this booze, or is eaten alive with curiousity and can't find a taste.. let me know..
