Lately I have been thinking about ordering a cabinet to store boxes in but a few concerns came to mind...

1) It seems that it's not wise to long-term store cigars in dressed boxes, because of chemicals in the paper etc, for further reading see Wilkey's very informative thread.

2) If you had a beetle outbreak, Could it easily spread to many of the boxes?

3) Moving the unit is difficult whereas moving 4 or 5 humidors is easier

Comments would be appreciated/

I had a Cabinet on order, but after reading some threads on another forum, I decided Im going with a wine cooler instead.
The main reason is temperature control, it a lot cheaper to buy a wine cooler and mod it to you needs (sometimes you dont have to) then buying a Cabinet humidor with an expensive temperature control system. Which may run in excess of $1500.00 for a base model.

jabba, I have been storing my dress boxes as they are for years and they age and smoke just fine. Do not forget vendors age them this way as well. I have never tasted or heard of anyone having a problem with dress boxes.

I love my cabinet and it has performed perfectly since I bought it around 2001.It is temp and humidity controlled and my cigars have never been in better shape. I used to have 5 coolers and 8 desk tops in service and now it is one big cabinet and it is much easier to keep track of my smokes.

As far as beetles are concerned,it isn't any different than getting them in a cooler or humidor, it is just they have access to more cigars in one place . Yes you will have to go through your stuff but you would have to do the same thing no matter what methods of storage you are using.

I would agree with The Master on this. There’s nothing wrong with ageing cigars in dress boxes. I think Wilkey's thread was more of a food for thought then absolution. It simply was there to answer a few questions in regards to earlier comments and to let people make there own decisions. If given the option between dress box’s and cab’s I think I would choose cabs, but by no means do I plan on not purchasing a cigar simply based on the box its in, nor do I intend to empty them. As far as beetles are concerned there not exactly the plague, as you can see moki’s post in cigar discussion one can simply inspect there stock every once in a while with out too much collateral damage. Several Fogs have cabinets and have some of the finest collections here.

Just my 2 cents.

Is there any way to post a link to Wilkey's thread? I can't find it...

Thanks,
Darren

I'm curious as to what wine coolers people are using to house their cigars. I've noticed that these are much more economical than a true cigar cabinet even cheaper than a high quality desk humidor. Is anyone actually doing this and what are the using?

Hey TYFNS, this has been discussed a number of times on this board so you can find great information on many of the how-to's on setting one up. I don't have time to do the search but I was involved in a couple of the discussions.

I use a small wine refrigerator from Sear's (Kenmore) that I purchased for under $150.
