Well, this is my personal review on a cigar that had some mixed reviews last night at the Universal Hilton HERF. I decided to give a go to see if all the comments lined up with my tastes, and to see if I needed to curse Jack for gifting me this little guy!!! LOL....Sorry, no camera for photos.....
Cabaiguan Petites
Size: 32 x 4.5"
Vitola: Labeled as Petite Corona, but its more like a Petite Panatela in size....
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Initial looks of the cigar are perfect. Flawless claro Connecticut wrapper, with the typical DPG triple cap. I cut just a tad of the head off, to reveal a perfect draw. Initial cold taste is clean straight forward tobacco, almost a bit cuban tasting in flavor.
Upon lighting, I did get a bit of spice typical to DPG cigar, but it quickly settled into a mild-medium bodied, toasty smoke. Into the first third, I did get a few small hints of what one could describe as "baby powderish" aromas, which several people stated last night, but for me it came from the outside aroma of the smoke, not from tasting the stogie itself. Into the second third, this aroma settled quite a bit, and I could really taste the Connecticut profile. I am not a fan of Connecticut wrappers, and the only word I can find to describe the typical taste is buttered toast, which was strong with this little guy. Still residing in the mild-medium range, the toasty flavors deepened as the cigar progressed into the last third, with just a slight spice on the palette. I shortly put it down after this point as it was getting a bit hot, and I typically don't smoke past the 1.5" mark. Overall, it was a decent cigar, I don't think it is something I would buy, but wouldn't refuse one if given one! Jack commented it was very Cuban-esque, and to an extent I agree. I would compare it to a Fonseca Cosacos if I had to make the comparison, both have the same buttery flavor profile.
I was nervous going into this, given all the baby powder comments, but I rather enjoyed it for what it was. Thank you for sharing a few with us Jack! It is much appreciated!!
