Buying Seconds

Could someone help steer this noob in the right direction. I have seen seconds being offered on a few cigar e-stores. Anyone here ever purchased any? I would appreciate feedback from those with more experience than I ( most anyone here :D ).

I used to buy them for yard gars.

Aside from not looking good and the once in a while plugged stick, they worked for me for a while.

But I have slipped into the darkness......wish I could find ISOM seconds. LOL!!

The Perdomo seconds I've had are pretty good overall. And then there are Connies, you can do a search for info on them here.

I've had a few good ones and a lot of bad ones. I'd stick to some of the better bundled smokes if you're looking for cheapies. Uncle Mikey has several that are very good at Mr. Bundles.

Especially the NSS Torps which I pointed to above :)

JR Cigars offers "alternatives" which are also pretty good for the price

What is an "alternative" and how does it differ from a second?

My favorite is the Cuba Aliados caladores. You can get it at JR's too. It isn't so much a second as a short filler smoke. Like the Padron fuma.

I am thinking in the future of just switching to MMs instead of bothering with NC cheaper smokes. ;)

Cheapie bundled smokes that are supposed to taste similar to some of the more popular cigars both NC and C. i.e. JR Alt to Cuban Montecristo #2

You know a bit back I was all gung-ho about seconds, but you can get damned good firsts for the price of some of the seconds.

Connies and Old Fashioned are good if you have a lot of humidor space to fill and don't mind aging them 6 months to a year before smoking them.

Personally the bundled Flor De Oliva Naturals @ $1 a stick, Several of the $30 any size selections at Mike's cigars (La Flor del Caney, Lusitania, and Mantequilla in particular), and $2/stick for Sancho Panza Double Maduros at JR would be my preference over any second I have had to date. Although many seconds are so because of wrapper blemishes, you are guaranteed to have more frequent burn problems with them compared to inexpensive firsts.
Look at mikescigars.com and jrcigars.com for sources - they both carry seconds and a large selection of inexpensive good firsts.

Good suggestion John

I also second the Cuba Aliados  Conies are pretty good too ;)

Thanks for all the good feedback. I think I'll shop around for some of the suggestions you all have given me and throw them in a tupperador(sp?) 'till summer. Right now I still have plenty to smoke since I have to smoke outside and winter seems to keep me down to 2 or 3 a week.

I agree with AVB on this one too

Connies are great. Often sold out, however you can get them through JR.
