I'VE BEEN SMOKING CIGARS FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW. MOSTLY AT PARTIES AND AT BARS WITH FRIENDS. JUST RECENTLY I PURCHASED MY FIRST HUMIDOR AND I STARTED TO BUY CIGARS TO KEEP AT THE HOUSE. I NOTICED THAT ONE OF MY CIGARS HAS A HOLE IN IT AND SOME BLACK DUST UNDERNEATH IT. WHEN I PICKED IT UP THERE WAS A LITTLE BLACK BEETLE WAS LYING THERE DEAD. WHAT SHOULD I DO? I SEPERATED THE CIGAR IN QUESTION, IS THERE ANY MORE I CAN DO TO SAVE THE REST?

Not a good situation if it was in your humi. Maybe someone like Ginseng will chime in on this one.

Caps Lock off, please.

Sounds like you had a beetle egg that hatched. The resulting larva was what ate your cigar. It then apparently pupated into the adult form, the beetle.

Take each cigar and tap the foot a few times on a clean piece of white paper. If tiny black grains like fine sand drop out, there's something in there munching. Smoke that stick now or chuck it.

It might not help, but it might not hurt to wrap all the smokes in double Ziplocs, then foil, and then put them in the fridge for 1 day, freezer for 4 days, then fridge for a day and then back out into the humi. You might not destroy any other eggs in there but you'd probably kill any active larva and these are the guys that do the damage.

BTW, how warm would you say the humidor got recently?

Wilkey

What was the brand of the cigars you had in the humi? Where there any ISOMs in there?

It Wasn't too warm in the humi. I live in Hawaii and I usually keep the house at about 70. The humidity was at about 70 as well, and I've been monitoring the other cigars regularly. I just tapped out he other ones too and no black dust has come out just out of the one bad one.

It was a CAO by the way. One of the Soprano edition cigars. A Boss cigar to be exact. I bought it from a local cigar shop. The majority of my friends that shop there never had any problems so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Is the rest of my stock at risk? A friend of mine said to throw out everything and start over. How can avoid this again?

1) Listen to the Wong! (Wilkey that is aka Ginseng)
2) Lower your RH a little and keep the box cooler.

Also - use the SEARCH feature on this site - the topic has been discussed.

The bug may have started in the shop.
Notice the Temp/Humidity at the shop the next time you go in...if it's hot and wet(the SHOP)...go elsewhere!

if it was a recently bought cigar, then chances are the eggs were in the cigar when you bought it. i would tell the owner about it. if he's not a jerk he will appreciate you doings so.

Considering that it is not a cheap cigar, if it was a very recent purchase, he might even replace it for you. Other than that, it looks like you got some pretty solid info here.
