BTL (Between the lines)
5x54 Perfecto
Wrapper: Natural/Maduro
Filler & Binder: DR
Time: 45mins
Storage: temp=65-70 humidity=59-67 constant
Age: personal=1month / from birth=unknown
Environment: 70deg, indoors-ventilated, cold glass of water
To be honest, I really don't know how rare these are let alone what they go for nowadays. I was gifted one a month ago so I decided it was time to wake this BTL up. Plus I needed a change from all the tatuajes and pepins I've been smoking lately. Construction was right on. Beautiful barber pole design of the natural and maduro wraps by fuente. Snipped the foot and cap with only a minor crack on the cap but that was mainly due to me getting used to my xikar cutter. Unfortunately the smoking pics came out too dark but here was my experience with this little bugger.
Light: Initial light produced a good amount of smoke. I could already tell it was going to burn a little uneven and I was right. I tried to straighten the burn out abit but I figured it would fix itself down the road.
1/3: Slight uneven burn still going. Great amount of smoke and it produced a nice spicey woodsy flavor. Hints of coffee (hazelnut or toasted almonds) would peek it's head out but spicey wood flavor overpowered that. Ash looked nice and strong. A powdery white look to it. It started to get a little hot so I slowed down abit.
2/3: The spicey woodsy flavor has toned down and the coffee notes are catching up. A sweet nutty flavor not noticed in other fuente cigars is labeling this BTL. Very tasty and makes me crave some type of sweet desert like cheesecake or carrotcake. If this cigar was edible, I'd probably have eaten it at this point. Ash is holding up strong a good 2"+ and burn started to even out in the middle of the cigar.
3/3: TIMBER! Ash has fallen about 2.5". The fat end of it was just too much to hold up. Trying to control the cherry, this cigar is definitely getting hotter and spiciness is picking up again. Nutty and coffee flavors have faded. Still enjoyable but I can sense some bitterness and my tongue tickling. Water is not helping at all. With about an inch left, I say goodbye to this fine smoke.
Conclusion: Great smoke and unlike any other fuente I've smoked. The middle 3rd was the most enjoyable. Not one sign of a plug. Produced a consistent amount of smoke. A solid medium bodied smoke with some nice complexity to it. Superb Fuente construction and looks. Assuming it's rarity and price, I would probably not commit to a box but in no way would I want to miss another experience with this fine cigar. Something I would smoke once a month just to mix things up from a regular lineup of padrons, tatuajes, pepins and other aged items. What a great experience and I hope our paths cross again.
