Blind Review - Pay It Backward
Review #1
Here I am with a second blind review in as many weeks – how lucky am I, huh? Thanks tigger for the opportunity to try this cigar.
Setup: The temp here on my back deck is perfect at 65 degrees. The sky is a wonderful blue with some clouds.
Prelight: Today’s mystery cigar is a 6” mocha-colored torpedo, with a ring gauge of 50 I’d guess. It appears to be well-constructed with no obvious flaws and only very minor veining. This cigar has a mildly sweet odor. The pre-cut taste of the torpedo’s tip reveals a minimal, spicy flavor – no sweetness at all. I clip the tip at an angle with my double bladed cutter without any problems and take a sample draw. The draw could be a touch easier for my tastes, but it’s not tight by any means. So far, everything about this experience is progressing just fine.
Light and Initial Impressions: I toast the foot and take the first few puffs from the cigar. The flavor is very pleasant and reminiscent of other cigars I have smoked. My initial thought: “is this a Fuente?” I look at the cigar and take a few more draws. If this cigar was a shade or two darker I would declare it to be an AF Cuban Beli. I don’t like to guess at what a cigar is when I do a blind review. Instead, I prefer to give the stick its own attention without trying to assign comparisons, so I give up on guessing and re-focus on what I am experiencing.
Although the flavor is very nice, this cigar does not put out a lot of smoke. The ash is a light- to medium-gray shade that appears very tight. A few minutes into the cigar and I’m noticing a light “oily” aftertaste or film on my tongue. It’s not unpleasant, just different. At an inch into the cigar, the burn so far is nice and even. This is a mild-medium, creamy cigar at this point.
One-third Point: I tap off the first ash at an inch and a half. As I suspected it is very compact and I’m easily able to pick it up and put it down without it crumbling. The flavor has changed somewhat as I am reminded of fried chicken! I swear, this is what I’m tasting. Strange as it’s never happened with any other cigar. The volume of smoke has picked up a bit, but still not voluminous. The chicken flavor disappears as quickly as it appeared and I detect the first hints of spiciness. I’m kinda glad as I was beginning to think Willy Wonka had started rolling cigars.
Rest of the Cigar: By the halfway point, the spiciness has really picked up. The cigar has not lost its smoothness, though, and is still a pleasing cigar. At the two-third point, the spice has ebbed and the pleasant, oily aftertaste has returned. The cigar has not turned harsh at all and there is no tar build up. The ash has turned a darker shade of gray. I put it down for good with about an inch and a half left unsmoked. My watch shows that the total smoking time was approximately an hour and fifteen minutes.
Overall Impression: This was a very nice, pleasant cigar. It was not as full-bodied as I normally prefer so, for me anyway, this is a cigar I would pick up when I wanted a nice, relaxing afternoon or morning smoke.
The reveal: So, what was is this cigar that I smoked. the envelope, please…
Thanks for the nice cigar, Tim, and for another chance to do a blind review. It was great, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!
