Cigar: Thomas Hinds Vintage I
Size: Robusto, 5 x 50
Exec Summary: Well-constructed CT shade cigar. Might be worth picking up if you like the woody mild-medium flavor profile, otherwise unremarkable. 6.5/10
Background: Thomas Hinds is a tobacconist located in Toronto, Canada. There are a number of TH branded cigars, some of which have excellent reputations. The Vintage I series is made with 1997 tobacco; reportedly, a small amount of tobacco is set aside for each year's successive vintage. I say reportedly, because the Vintage series is being liquidated; I bought a 5 pack on CBid.
NB. Larry Lynn carries these, and I've bought one singleton from him, a churchill. I recall that it was a lot better than this one, about a 7 to 7.5/10, and lacked the annoying bitter note.
First impressions: Claro wrapper, appears to be CT shade. Fragile looking, a few small veins and wrinkes. On the small side for a robusto. The band is black with gold embossing. Kept at 68/68 for 3 months prior to smoking.
Prelight: Smells of tobacco. Med-soft to the touch. Clips cleanly and easily. Good so far.
Construction/Burn: Lit easily. Burn is absolutely straight, no corrections needed. Solid construction, very solid light gray ash at start, becomes crumbly as cigar progresses. Lots of dense smoke. Stays lit for several minutes between puffs (very important when it comes to writing reviews in between!)
Taste: Bitter at the very start (might be my fault - I torched the foot pretty well), mellows out immediately but a slight bitter/pepper note continues through the cigar. Mild to medium in strength, the aroma is quite woody, with a creaminess that comes in around midway; unfortunately, it fades fairly quickly, which is a pain. The pepper and a cinnamon odor picks up as you approach the band, and it becomes a little more interesting, but never gets to medium. Finally, a sour note (which I've noticed in several mild Dominicans, so I suspect this one is a Dominican blend) appears as you approach the end. Put down at 1 inch.
