First off thanks to everyone that will participate. My work schedule is looking rather hectic for the next week or so. I wanted to get this thread posted before I get caught up in work. No format, no special request, just that you do an honest review.

Thanks again.

Tim

Black Patch Cigar Co.

The Black Patch “Classic” doesn’t need an excuse to be smoked. This cigar blend has a flavorful and rich taste that will never be duplicated. The Filler blend of the “Classic” consists of Kentucky/USA Broadleaf, Dominican Republic South Bonao Piloto Cubano, and Havana El Holloso secco. The binder is La Vega Olor.

We searched for a wrapper with an annual consistency for large production and discovered a natural sun grown Indonesian with very fine veining that is discreetly aromatic. The “Classic” exhibits a variety of spices with a medium persuasion.

Size: Corona (5.5 x 44)

First of all thanks MX for providing these. My review is going to be short. I have a strange pallate to begin with but this cigar in my opinon was horrible.

The burn was even the ash was blotchy at best. Construction was comparable to a white owl or king edwards IE lumpy veiny and inconsistent. The first inch was bitter and made me want to choke. I wanted to give it a chance so I continued smoking it the flavor profile never changed and I put it out at the halfway mark.

It did provide bountiful amounts of smoke which I am sure was a great insect repellant because I am sure I saw a fly choke and die after flying through it.
It could be that this was just a bad stick among a bunch of good ones so this review should not stop anyone from trying these.

I as promised smoked the classic tonight. I still have no freaking idea what happened to my card reader for my PC so I'll be posting the pictures tomorrow.

I'm going into this saying that I really wanted to like this cigar even before Dale tried the one I gave him. And I almost did just that.

The cigar is really well rolled with a nice triple cap, it burnt like a razor and both the look of the wrapper and the ash was aesthetically pleasing.

The draw was a bit tight but that's normal in medium and short filler cigars, and once it opened up it gave me plenty of smoke.

But for one reason and one reason only, I disliked the Black Patch "Classic" and that was the aftertaste. Extremely bitter and slightly metallic it made smoking this cigar a chore. I even had my wife take a few puffs after cleaning her palate and she said the same thing.

The inhaled smoke is fine, not a lot of spice or flavors, just a nice tobacco taste, but when you exhale, the aftertaste hits you like a piece of re-bar. And unfortunately it grows stronger the longer you smoke the cigar. I did nub it, and it made my tongue numb. Its been a long time since I've gone straight to the Listerine after smoking a cigar, but the classic had me walking to the bathroom at a fast pace.

Dale told me straight up he wants nothing to do with the last one I have so I'm going to dry box it for a few days and see if the after taste goes away when the cigar is drier.

So there you have it, a would have been good ruined by one thing. I'm looking forward to seeing if this was just isolated to this 4 pack or if the rest of you experience the same thing.

I'm not willing to give up on Black Patch just yet, I like the website and the concept behind the Brand, so I'm going to contact the company see if I can buy a few singles (2 of each) of the Premiums to try against the classic which is meant as a lower price point yard-gar.

If the aftertaste is something more than one of us notices then the manufacturer will at least know what they have to change to make the cigar better, and if was only the 4 pack I received well that's the luck of the draw. Unfortunately most people experiencing such a bad aftertaste would never try another again.

all set up and ready to go.

I fiddled with the contrast and brightness to better show the triple-cap and neat looking cigar band. I'd love to know what the story is behind the woman wearing the eye-patch.

Like I said, as far as the construction goes I had no complaints.

nubbed, now excuse me while I go brush my teeth, tongue, lips and gums.... bleh!

See the Into post for Cigar Details

I would again like to thank Eric w/ Black Patch Cigars for making this possible. You are a very generous Brother indeed.

Construction: This cigar is built like a porn star. It looks good in all the right places. It has a deep honey brown wrapper with very fine veining, and a super triple cap. If this is what their bottom tier cigar looks like, I gotta see the flagship.

Pre-Light/Light: Here I fell from my normal routine. I did sniff it, it smelled like sweet fresh tobacco with a hint of Cinnamon, this is the first time I think I have picked out a distinct note. I forgot the pre-draw, and went straight into toasting the foot. As a pulled to get his baby started I noticed the tight draw, not so tight that i had to work, but I definitely knew I was smoking.

1st Thrid: First 1/2 inch was bitter, I think I over did it on the light. After that, it mellowed out, lots of white smoke, and a great aroma. The flavor was that of tobacco, and this being my 3rd Black Patch, I knew that I needed to smoke it slow. They tend to give you the "hot" taste if you smoke too fast. I knew about the bitter after taste from the first 2, this one has had almost a month in the humi at 70-74 and rock steady 65%. It helped! The after taste was there, but was not as harsh and, it did not linger as long.

2nd/3rd Thirds: The cigar does not have a profile that changes, I did find a spot at the half way point, where it was real bitter. So I ashed it, and purged it, then let it settle for a few minutes, and we were back in business.

Finish: I took this down to about an inch, before the heat turned it bitter.

I think these really do benefit from humi time, I will hold on to a few for a couple of months and try again. All in all, not that bad of a smoke. I have talked to a few of the soldiers that I have passed these out to, and even thought they are no experts, they all had the same impression as I did. One even told me that he would rather smoke this than a RP Connecticut, because at the Black Patch has flavor.....

Hope everyone enjoys

Tim

I received one of these from Wurm about a week ago on my promise to post a review.

Appearance/Construction: not the best, not the worst. Appearance was fairly "rustic," with a dark but somewhat blotchy wrapper. The construction was decent, but not up to the standards of a premium. I'd say it's probably appropriate for the price point.

Pre-light: just a mild tobacco aroma, no flavors beneath the surface that I could detect.

First third: mild, but that bitterness the others talk about is there too. It's not on the inhale, but seems to kick in once you begin to exhale the smoke. (No, I don't really mean "inhale" but I don't know what else to say.) The bitterness coats the tongue and the back of the throat. I had an irrepressible urge to spit a lot, probably because I didn't want to swallow any of that taste that was in my mouth. Aside from the bitterness, a straight-up mild tobacco flavor. Not bad, but nothing to examine, no undercurrents or whiffs of any other flavors, no spice or wood or leather or earth or any of that good stuff.

Second third: the same as the first. Absolutely no change. If nothing else, it's consistent, I guess.

Third third: began getting hot and more bitter, so I dropped it in the rocks with about 1.5 inches left.

Conclusion: not worth smoking, IMHO. I would probably not take one if it was given to me, unless I was exceptionally worried about being polite. You'd be better off with some premium seconds (RP SG  ) or staking out cbid for some deals rather than buying these.

Thanks MX and Wurm for the cigar, I wish I had a better review to put up here for you.

I took one for the team on this.

Classic Corona 5.5 x 44

Construction was fine. Draw wasn't loose or tight. Burn OK with a white ash that lasted an inch.

Appearance was bad. Look to have water spots on the wrapper. Lots of blotches.

Taste was bad cheap tobacco. This is a gas station cigar all the way. Not even a good gas station cigar. Mild with a harshness too it. Made me spit allot. I will not be smoking anymore of these and I have no desire to try the higher end ones from this company. I'm thinking of sending these to GotaCohiba as a form of punishment.

Tim I would like to thank you for idea of spreading the wealth. If you like any of the people you sent these cigars too please release them from the obligation of doing a review.

Sound like real good folks over there at Black Patch. Too bad their cigars seem to have missed the mark... :whistling:

I'll pass...

Thanks DG and everyone else for posting a review.

I don't want anyone to think that they are obligated to to review the cigars. That was not my intention, I just thought that we could provide the community a source of information on these cigars. There seemed to be some interest in them, and what better way to help.

Smoke them if you want, review them if you want. It is all good to me.

I'll be smoking one later today and will post about it tomorrow.

Ouch.

Thanks for all your hard work guys. This is one cigar that goes on the "do not try" list.

I had a feeling you'd get that weird after taste as well. I sent you the cigar before I had smoked one so don't get too mad at me, Bob. :sign:

Review one of those La Libertad Gran Pantelas I sent you... I guarantee you that you wont mind reviewing one of those, great sticks and one of my go-tos!

I had my chance to try a Black Patch whilst riding my mower earlier today. There really isn't anything I can add too help out this poor cigar. It burned just fine but there wasn't that much flavor and I also had that slight metallic taste through out most of the stick. I'm not sure age will help since there wasn't much to smooth or mellow out. I have no idea what could help out the metallic taste. I didn't notice any bitterness until the last inch or so and I was ready to toss it by that point anyway.
