As far as placement of your feeders, it really depends how you use your deck , and how interactive you want to be with the birds.

For example, I do my naked Tai Chi on the deck - neighbors call me the Human Sundial - but the birds don’t seem to mind it.

Don’t be silly George, my neighbors have iPhones.

I used to do my naked Tai Chi at night in the backyard, but I learned the landscape lighting cast a puppet show shadow over the neighborhood - traumatized neighbors thought they were under attack from Mr. Snuffleupagus.

Would it make any difference to your opinion if I was taking the pictures from my recliner in the living room instead of the rocking chair on the front porch? Those rocking chairs are not as comfortable...

I believe this is a Hairy Woodpecker. He has the long beak and is substantially bigger than the Downey’s that have been hanging around.

The flowering crabapple has really started to bloom and the birds have been using it for cover from the heat this week.

Love these birds! From the way they partner for life, to their distinct call. Also love to watch them fly overhead. So fast! I always try to do a few loud as possible hand claps, then watch them dive and maneuver away from the imaginary shot gun pellets headed at them.

They are Mourning Doves. We get a bunch of them at the feeders. They generally eat the seeds off the ground. Definitely not the brightest birds we have stopping by...
