Well a few months ago I was gifted a few vintage Cuban cigars. I got around to smoking one tonight.

So here goes....

Brand: Belinda Claro Claro circa 1955

Shape: Panatela...mix fill

Appearance: Light brownish green wrapper, several veins, very toothy. The filler tobacco was a few shades darker than the wrapper..light brown. The cigar was pre-punched. Something on the wrapper sparkeled when it was held up to the light.

Construction: The cigar was well made with no noticable flaws. It was firm with no soft spots. The cap and foot were well formed...very clean.

Flavor: The pre-light draw was firm but easy. It had hints of musty tea..a little sweet. Upon lighting the cigar I noticed a light vegital flavor. As the cigar progressed the vegital became nutty with just a hint of spice...almost like a RASS. It had that unmistakable Cuban twang. The cigar was very mild. The smoke had a light almost fruity arouma.

Ash: The ash was typical Cuban...dark grey and solid. The tooth on the wrapper was still visable on the ash. It held to about an inch and a half. The cigar burned well and did not need to be toutched up at all.

Overall impression: IMHO this cigar was well past it's prime. It still had enough flavor to make it an interesting. It was a unique experiance smoking a cigar that was made three years before my birth. This cigar has seen alot of history. Kinda of a shame to see it go. ;)

Oh! Belinda Claro. Sorry, NM.

Next year I should be travelling to Asia, and hopefully will be able to stop in Hong Kong and check out some of the vintage stuff they have in some of those shops. In the meantime, I envy that you've been able to try this, even though you felt the cigar was past its prime.

I'm lucky enough to have a couple more old cigars. One was made in 1958, the year I was born. Gonna smoke that one on my 50th birthday.

That is very cool, Ken. The oldest cigar I've had the opportunity to sample was rolled in or prior to 1978. Smoke my last one at LC-Smoker's wedding in June. It was a great experience.

Love the fact that you have one from the year you were born. Smoking that on your 50th will be a momentous occasion. :D
