Well it was raining cats and dogs here in "Sunny old Germany" last night and I got the hankering to smoke a cigar...

So my wonderful wife offered to drive me to the "Classic Rock Cafe" my favorite watering hole and owned by a fellow BOTL who said they will have to enforce a smoking ban with a shotgun in his place.

The hand-painted sign, the Bartender Tankred "Tank" put up a few months back and the cigarette machine inside the door, yep this is a smoking bar.

Now onto the review, I received this stick in a bomb from a great BOTL and good friend here at CP, Infinity. When Brian gets in the mood to bomb someone, run for cover! When I received this stick the consensus here at CP was "LET THEM REST!" and I did just that, but I decided last night that it had been long enough and took it with me to the bar.

The stick resting on top of one of the huge speakers right next to the pool table...

Post Clip / Pre light aroma was of good mild tobacco with a bit of grassiness to it, sort of the taste that a Cuaba has after you cut it but not as pronounced. Perfect draw.

The wrapper was flawless and silky smooth to the touch. Hitting the stick with flame produced the same smell as the Pre light test except it was a lot stronger on the nose. Smelled pretty damn good to be honest.

Let me mention something about the AVO 80th for those of you that have a few resting or are planning to purchase a few now that the prices on them have dropped a bit. If your one of the people who likes to leave cigar bands on till the cigar burns down to them, don't do it unless you've checked that they will slip off easily when you get that far. The wrapper on the AVO 80th is thinner than old-school tracing paper and if you wait like I did, removing the band becomes a serious hassle and you WILL damage the cigar. So if it slips around easily feel free to leave it on, but if it sticks like a Fuente band... you might want to remove it before you fire the cigar up.

I paired it with a good cold Dunkel Wiezen, its almost as good as coffee for smoking with a milder smoke.

I threw a euro on the pool table, put together my cue and sat back to watch the play and smoke...

The first inch was IMO too mild and really grassy, I was starting to get the uneasy feeling that this stick might not be for me, when suddenly the grassiness fell into the background and more floral and nutty flavors came to the forefront. Still very mild but tasty... very tasty! The ash was a medium gray color and extremely loose and flakey, not a cigar you'd want to smoke in a storm.

Right around the time I noticed the change for the better

Just some of the eye candy viewed from my seat at the pool table.

I started shooting 8-ball and it turns out I was on last night, played 8 games and won 6 of them (scratched on the 8 on one of the losses  ). The cigar's taste profile stayed the same the whole time, lots of nuts and flowers, with a small amount of spice thrown in as it crept toward the end. Mild enough to hold in your mouth while making a shot and good enough not to want to put down for long.

Here is some random pictures of the bar to give you a feel for the place...

Here is where the band decided to make my life miserable, I damaged the wrapper pretty badly getting it off, but the cigar was so well rolled that it didn't care and continued to burn like a razor to the end.

Even this far in the cigar remained pleasant and smokable, it was never harsh nor did it decide to bite me once during the 2 hours I was smoking it (yeah yeah I'm a slow smoker) nor did it go out even when I was too busy making a shot to pay attention. I also had more than one person come up to me and remark "Damn your cigar smells good!"

NUBBED!

So in closing, a really good cigar that I enjoyed. In fact I liked it so much I went online last night and ordered a 5er. I'll be interested in hearing how the AVO LE07 compare to the "80" when a few of you get around to reviewing them.

Shawn

P.S. Yes I did get a few funny looks taking pictures of my cigar :sign:

That's classic...no pun intended :whistling:

So, what happened to the second half of the stick? You looked up, saw the eye candy and that's it

Excellent review and pics Shawn, I can feel the energy in that place.
Looks very much like an English pub, even has the underground sign on the wall.

I see you got "Holmes" boys there as well huh

Yeah and he is from Kansas City, I was wearing my outlaw T-shirt and he got all excited, lol he even knows where the shop is even though he has never been inside.

Friday and Saturday its a madhouse in there, I usually go on Wednesdays to have a quiet beer or two and enjoy a good cigar, but every once in a while I have to jump on a few rounds of 8-ball and the weekend is when the good players come out of the woodwork. Its good for the soul.

I've been going to that place for 22 years now, I met my wife and asked her to marry me over near pool table #1 and now I take my 17 year-old there to shoot pool with me and listen to good music.

One of the more enjoyable reviews I've read Shawn.

Every time I read a post with your pics in them I miss living over there. Sounds like a great time smoking a great cigar.

Thanks Wyatt, and LMAO!! @ your sig!

Bought three AVO LE 07 last week at a local. Smoked one the same day, thought it was a very good tasting mild-medium cigar. Went back yesterday and bought three more, that says something. $11.50 a cigar. Corona gorda size. No band. I like the AVO 80th also. Been a while since smoked an AVO 80th, iirc it may be more medium-full than the LE 07's mild-medium. Both are very nice cigars imho.

Great review, nice eye candy, and a fantastic little hangout there. I particularly enjoyed the fact that you asked you wife to marry you in there!

Nice review and great pics. I smoked one of these when the first came out and was not impressed. It made everyone feel sick, really. I got another chance to try one a week ago or so and it had improved a lot. Still not much to get real excited about, but I could at least enjoy smoking it this time. :)

---John Holmes...

Nice review bro, I have smoked a couple of them, they are not worth the $ in mine opinion, but hey that’s my opinion. Thanks for the review and great pics, that looks like a fun bar to get hammered at and to enjoy a cigar.

Wow,

Nice review and helluva photonovel!

BTW, did you say exactly how much age you had on these?

Wilkey

I think Brian sent it to me less than a month after release... and if I remember they came out in March of last year ( ??? ) so a year or close to it at 65% RH and 65 to 72°F.

I need to start making a cigar journal to keep track of age. I find it easy to remember where I purchased or from who I receceived a stick in case of a bomb or trade... but I've alway been fuzzy on dates.

Speaking of dates... I have a Partagas Churchills de Luxe from a Code NISC box (Dec 1997) resting ATM, I seem to have picked up a head cold from walking home in the rain on the night I did the AVO 80 review... But I cant wait to smoke and review this, the oldest Cuban, I'm knowingly going to smoke.
