Ashton VSG Robusto (I apologize for the dark pics...only had my camera on my phone with me atthe time)
Size: 5 1/2 x 50
Cigar Shape: Robusto
Cigar Filler: Dominican Republic
Cigar Binder: Dominican Republic
Cigar Wrapper: Ecuador
Dark wrapper, specifically grown for this cigar. Veins are prominent. Smell is cedar, flowery, vanilla. Wet the cap and made the cut. Draw feels loose, but feels well balanced in the bite.
Light - toasted the foot and it lit right up.
A nice white ash began to form and even burn. The aromas and taste of cedar & spice became apparent on the pallet
1st third - Great aroma of cedar, spice and a hint of vanilla. Plumes of smoke right off the bat. Strong white ash continued. 1st ash was at about 1.5 inches.
2nd third - Carefully tried to unband cigar. Unfortunately it was glued to the wrapper and a piece tore off. Quick fix, lick the spot it tole off from, place the piece on, and then lick it again, hold while you smoke the next couple of puffs. (No pectin readily available)
Noted the flavor was changing to a woody, leather. The draw tightened to perfect as I smoked it. Hints of mocha / cocoa started to be subtle. The fix was holding strong as was the ash 1/2 way through.
Final third - Mocha / cocoa enhanced: Ash still holding strong but the fix was flaking as nub was heating.
2nd ash fell off razor sharp as I came to the end of the 2nd third. The wrapper also started to crack at the fix as it heated and expanded. The final third is usually always my favorite in a full bodied cigar, no exception here. The smoke was thick and chewy.
The burn became uneven and hot; time to stop.
Summary: All in all, a very good cigar. Good burn, good ash, and an assortment of taste for the pallet. I will age some then revisit at that time. The range of flavors changed and were noticable as I progressed through. For a mid-full bodied cigar this is one I will go definately age and come back to.
