Ashton Virgin Sun Grown (VSG) Illusion
*This review will be short as well as without pictures, as I was without my camera, and I was in the company of others at the lounge and so was unable to take notes.
Last night, my girlfriend Deanna, her father Dave, and my botl Shant all decided we would go to Taylor's for a cigar and a game of chess. (Shant went hoping to catch the end of the Mets/Dodgers game) Deanna selected a Padron Londres Maduro, while her father had a Padron 1964 Exclusivo, Shant had an AVO No. 2 Maduro, and I decided I would have my first Ashton VSG, in the Illusion size.
This cigar has a flawless construction, and sports a dark, oily wrapper that is ultra supple to the touch. The cigar has a slight springy feel when squeezed, and on clipping the cap I find a perfect draw, not too tight, not too loose. On the cold draw I taste a sweetness that reminds me of ripe fruit for some strange reason....I like it! I skipped toasting the foot, and went straight to a few long pulls to get the foot burning, and then take one deep, slow draw. On letting the smoke out gently through the mouth and nose, I find that sweetness right up front, it takes on a raisin taste almost, with a touch of vanilla and rich tobacco. Wow! This was a very, very powerful smoke in the flavor department, though interestingly enough it lacked any spice, which was a pleasant surprise. This was easily one of the smoothest cigars I have had. The burn was spot on, and slowly worked its way down revealing a tightly packed ash of gray and whites that held on until knocked off every inch. Through the entire cigar, the flavors became even more rich, with a touch of leather coming out at about the halfway point. The strength was there, but subtle at the same time, reminding me to take it slow so as not to end up sick later! I was drinking a Coca Cola classic in the glass bottle with this cigar, and damn did it compliment it perfectly. I nubbed this sucker, and was very, very sad to see it over.
This is easily one of the best cigars I have had since I had my first GOF Carlito Double Robusto. I would give it a 10/10, easily. A box of these is for certain on my list of must haves. I also picked up an Oliva V Lancero, which is now resting in the humidor awaiting a review.
I strongly recommend that if any of you have yet to try the Ashton VSG's, that you do so ASAP. This is a hell of a smoke.
