Arturo Fuente Royale Salute Sun Grown - reviewed May 10, 2006 by vortex

This huge sucker has a mottled, dark brown, and oily wrapper. It is an "A" size cigar at 7.5 inches and 54 ring. It sports a Eduadorian Sun Grown wrapper and vintage Dominican binder and filler. This cigar promises to be a four-course meal! It has a faint barnyard aroma at prelight and a very firm feel.

After a straight guillotine cut, I toasted the foot and drew in my first, copious puff. MMMMM :p Immediate gratification! Sweet and peppery at the same time. A faint cocoa undertone soon follows. It's burning perfectly leaving a light grey, well formed ash. As I get past the first inch the flavor increases and mellows. Now this is a profile I like. It's not the first one I've smoked and I am amazed at the consistency of this cigar. These rollers are the best and the tobacco is nicely aged right out of the box.

As I hit the first quarter, the ash and burn are still perfect and the flavor starts to build in intensity. There goes the ash at 2 1/2 inches. Not bad considering I was typing with it in my hand! If I were careful I may have gotten twice that as it was such a perfect ash and burn.

At the halfway point I am getting a little uneven burn probably due to me puffing a little too much as this flavor is hard to resist. I think it will correct if I ease up a bit. It's hard because the flavors just keep building on this monster.

Also, the ease of draw and quantity of smoke increases as the length starts to approach robusto size. These combine with the nicotine high to make me a little too enthusiastic. What a glutton, huh!

As I ease up on it the burn straightens out and the last third is just pure smoking pleasure. The pepper eases up some and the sweetness increases toward the end. It is amazing to see this cigar reduced to a nub and still tasting great. I already have this cigar as part of my rotation. The only problem is the time it takes to smoke it - about 1 1/2 hours.

On a 10 scale I rate this nearly a 10! Whatever slight improvement that could be made is insignificant. Even the price is right at a little over $5 per by the 10-box at Famous!

Nice review.

Hard to fault any Fuente cigar, you certainly enjoyed this one.

This is obviously a biased review.
Any review of an already familiar cigar is probably a little biased.

Wow you smoked an 'A' size in 1 and 1/2 hours... it normally takes me well over 2 hours for a cigar that big.

Nice review and sounds like a tasty stick

My shop just put out a box of these as well as the king b and cuban belicoso's......I like these three sizes better.Something about the larger gauges and legnth that makes the sungrown gars from AF shine.....well,that and some age.

Thanks for the great review.

Good cigar if your looking for something big but its just a larger version of the chateau & double chateau sg's. Nothing i'd break my back to get. Glad you liked it.

I like all the Fuente Gran Reserva sungrowns, too. If I had to pick one, the Cuban Beli is a good compromise. Oddly, I rate the Double Chateau last.(858, due to age, has unfair advantage)
The Chateau is the most convenient, timewise. But none build flavor like the Royale Salute!

A good friend of mine smokes boxes and boxes of these. Good smoke overall but, I have to agree with Mrepp nothing to break your back over.
I agree completely! In fact, I am appalled at the high prices some of these AF Gran Reserva SGs are scalped at on the web. The 858 is rare and has some age on them because they haven't made any in a while. I have seen them go for over $20/stick!
It's a $5 cigar! COME ON!

It's the same with ISOMs. The Cuban embargo has made them rarer and hence more valuble. Yet many are quite ordinary IMHO. It's all in one's perception.

That's why I consider VALUE an important property of a cigar and why AF Gran Reserva SGs should be rated higher beceause of their generally low price.
