I was in my local shop yesterday, lookin' at a few Padron's and got to talkin' to a worker-bee about the recent (last year or two) production of regular line Fuente products. According to him, since they have gone "big time" and are no longer a "small family" operation, their product has suffered recently(in quality, taste, etc.). In fact, he was steerin' me away from any box purchases.

Now, I don't smoke the Fuente regular line enough, or have enough knowledge of prior years, to say one way or the other. So, if you have a take, one way or the other, please feel free to post it here. :D

As a side note, he was talkin' favorably about Rocky Patel, CAO, Padron and a few other brands. Hmmm!

I usually smoke the SG line and have not experenced and change. Just split a box with a brother here and they have been exceptional. Sounds like some of the other brands may have a sales contest going.

I'm sure there is a possibility that they went "big time" and some of their product may suffer, you see it all the time with other products.

But like Sarge said, sounds like he has more of a reason to want you to purchase another brand.

Did I miss the memo? Are their operations significantly more large-scale this year than last?

Cigar shop sales tactics. I don't know what the deal is but some shops bad mouth Fuente just to push the other lines. He probably pushes the other brands in an effort to get the premiums like the Padron 26/64's. That or his profit is smaller on the Fuentes.

Exactly as the others have said. Can't really fault him for plugging the other brands as excellent, but I sense other motives at play.

Cigar shops seem to push a certain cigar for some reason. When I started working at the one I am at now, they said to push, push, push Davidoff. And to never suggest AF and other popular brands b/c they sell by themselves.

Anyways, like BK and Sarge said, it sounds like the cigar shop you visited was pushing the others for some reason.

I told him since all the AF's are CHIT, he needed to sell 'em to me at 50% of THEIR cost!! :p He just kinda looked at me funny.

I'm not sure of the motive because they do have the 26's and 64's and even a handful left ofthe 40th Anni's. Who knows. :)

I'll just keep pushin' for the 50% off sale!

The NOOB part of me is going to show on this one. I was looking at Arturo Fuente Hemingway series. Are they all the same blend just different sizes and shapes? How about some of the other Arturo Fuente series?

They come with different wrappers. Natural, Maduro, & the elusive BTL. In regards to the fillers and binders used I think we should ask our AF database.

Hey moki!!! :D

The 858 natural has been a cigar I've been smoking since the mid-seventies(usually two/week). Had an urge for one yesterday while working at the shop and I grabbed one from a just-opened box. Same quality cigar, no change.

Cameroon, connecticut broadleaf, and sungrown wrappers too.

Although I have just chalked it up to bad luck, but I have been getting some tough draws lately.

Opus X tend to be rolled fairly tight because they pack a lot of tobacco in there, and smoke rather poorly at humidities over 65%.

Are you keeping them at 70% Most stores do, and they need a few weeks to come down to whatever your humi is at before they smoke best.

If you can wait that long :)

I have personally never had a bad cigar from Rocky Patel or his other line Indian Tabac. Sun Grown, Edge, IT Super Fuerte, IT Cameroon Legend  Some goes for CAO. I love their Itialia line (got one in the Working Mans Pass and it was great!) The Gold and Black lines are also very good if you like the "spice" or "peppery" smokes. Unfortunately, I have never had a Padron (somebody needs to bomb me with some good Padron smokes . . . hint hint . . . I generally respond in kind)

By the way I have never had the AF regular line, the only Fuente I have had was an 858 Maduro. I have a Cuban Belicoso I acquired in a trade that I am jones'n to put flame to. :D
