Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story review

I headed over to my local smoke shop (Havana House) on Saturday to talk to them about some issues I was having with the humidor I bought from them a bit ago. That was my cover story, anyway. The trip out there actually allowed me to ogle over their cigar selection; it's the same kind of strange impulse that compels women to shop for shoes.

I picked up a few random cigars, among them two Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story's. The Carolina/St. Louis game was on the rather massive HD TV in the smoke shop's lounge, and with just 10 minutes or so left in the 4th Quarter, I figured a Short Story would be just the thing to fire up to watch the game.

Construction on this cigar is wonderful; it's as tight as a petite little gymnast, with a wonderful wrapper, and perfectly curved shape. It feels tight in your hands, but draws easily -- a great combination in my book.

This stout little smoke sparked right up; have I mentioned that I love being able to light cigars like this by just torching the little nub? So convenient. After a few puffs, I was really starting to enjoy this smoke. It was a nice subtle blend of spice, vanilla, cedar, and a hint of citrus. All of the flavors were quite mellow, but it was not an overly mild smoke either. A nice understated but tasteful smoke.

I'd put it firmly in the medium bodied range. The kind of smoke that has all of the flavors you're looking for, but none of them jump out and scream at you. It was the perfect companion to the amazing football game I was watching, and I even got a mild buzz from it, which rather caught me by surprise.

Also, the best-laid plans go awry: the game went into overtime, and I was smoking that poor diminutive Short Story down to a ridiculous size ("Anyone here got a roach clip??"). It never got bitter or harsh, and on the other hand, was never so mild as to be tasteless. I just wished at that point that it was a little longer! The burn throughout was perfect, and the ash was long and solid (though I personally tap it off anyway, just in case it decides to fall on my clothing).

I could easily see this being a "go to" smoke when I want a quick little smoke; this baby is smooth but tasty. I do wonder if it is worth the $6 or so I paid for it; but given that I smoke cigars only a couple of times a week normally, I'd rather have a few excellent premium cigars then have double the number of mediocre ones. Unlike some other cigars I've had, this one is worth the boutique-tax in my book.

Moki, you can get the Short Stories for much less at Famous ($108.95) and at JR Cigars ($110.00). They are currently both out of stock and when they are in stock they go fast but with patience and keeping an eye on the sites you can get them.

Thanks, yeah, I'll definitely check them out if I decide to buy a box of these. I just picked up a couple on a whim at the local smoke shop. Glad I did...

Yea Moki, check out seriouscigar.com. They have them for $108 a box and are in stock acording to the site. At a little over $4 a stick I can say they are definately worth the money and one should always have a number on hand. One of my smoking buddies is way hooked on these and I like them a bunch myself.

Nice review man.

Nice review... i have one in my humidor as we speak and im looking forwards trying it!

I had one gifted to me recently and I loved it right down to the 'ol fingernails. Like you said, just wish it was a bit longer!

Another great review by my good buddy moki! I just pulled one of these from Styx's pass. I'm glad you liked it; I've been eager to light it up!

great review my only complaint was it was to short also, one nice cigar , it was one of my first cigars that I tried . I started to notice that I was compareing everything I smoked to the short story , finally went back to it and it was just as good as I remembered . Ill def. need to keep some of these on hand.

Ah Yes, the Short Story! What a wonderful little smoke. I smoked one last weekend on my porch. Just enough to satisfy my tatstebuds! A great little Cameroon smoke!! :D

nice write up....i smoked one when I first started smoking...guess I really didn't appreciate it then....I have one more which I've been saving...guess it's time to try it again....

Azon, my, my, my, my, my....that will get me in trouble..... oh di you say something?

Thought I'd pull this one up from the past.

Unfortunatly I didn't experiance what all of you did. Fired one up last week and was really looking for a smooth full flavor. The looks of the cigar is great but did not deliver what I thought it would.

Found it to be a very firm draw, not tight, but you really had to work it to get a low amount of smoke. Found the flavor to be harsh and almost that dirty ashtray taste that you hear about. I really was looking forward to nubbing this little thing but only keep it for 2/3's.

I'm sure this is a really great smoke to some. I think my taste have just been swayed by the Nicaragua's that I have enjoyed.

Snowdust you need to give the Short Story another chance. Sounds like you may have got one of the few duds.

I find the short story to be sweet and smooth. A little mild but tasty enough to enjoy. Great review Moki

hmm... sounds to me like you got a dud. What you're saying you tasted is nothing like what it should be. If you have another one, give it a try.

Nice review Andrew. Will have to pick one of these up at some point. W/ my schedule, short smokes are good :)
