Sent one of these to a friend of mine; he wrote back with a review, I'm posting it here in because I thought it might interest some people. I think the burn problems are likely because he smoked it right out of the bag the day he got it from me (humipack in the bag was likely unevenly humidifying it).
.....
Arturo Fuente Añejo Shark No.77 -- this is perhaps the most unique of the Añejo line. All of the Añejos are released once per year, around Christmas time, in limited quantities. The maduro wrappers are aged for a year in cognac barrels before being rolled into the cigars. The Shark has a unique "square to torpedo" shape.
The Shark at first smell does offer a hint of Cognac, but this is overpowered by the smooth smell of the tobacco. Not too strong a smell, it sneaks into the nostrils at close range.
The Shark has a difficult draw, for me. I?m having a hard time keeping it lit. In fact, I?m afraid to put it down. It requires a deeper punch than I expected. The smoke itself is light and flavourful with no bite and an aroma that doesn?t overpower everything else in the room.
I can?t say enough about the flavours in this cigar. That cognac, while barely present, really does something different to it. I?ve tried this cigar with some cognac, but the real kicker, if you can believe it, is a hot cup of black coffee. Right on. Mixed together, a nice French roast complements the flavours of the cigar.
About a third of the way through a little bite has developed. I?ve set the cigar aside for a few minutes and it is burning nicely on its own. I gave it an even light initially, but it seems to be burning rather unevenly. Not a problem, really, but I thought that was somewhat important.
All in all I found the Shark to be increasingly sweet as it smoked. The flavours became more pronounced and more difficult to differentiate. The cognac aging really imparts the same feel to the Shark as certain Scottish tobacconists habits of aging their pipe tobacco in old Scotch barrels.
The Shark is a good digestif cigar. Good with a drink after dinner or while chatting over coffee. Probably not the best for smoking while playing any sort of game or reading a novel, but overall it was satisfying, if not the best cigar I?ve had.
