After being a native Californian for nearly 30 years, I'm now looking to get out of this state. The negatives of living in California FAR outweigh the positives. I've heard a lot of good things about Austin, and am seriously considering moving there. If anyone has ever been to Beverly Hills or West LA (aka West Side), CA -- I'm looking for something close to that in/near Austin. What are the high end parts of TX? I'm sure they're a lot more affordable than our high end areas of California.

Nothing in California is affordable, taxes are rising, unemployment has skyrocketed, smog sucks, traffic sucks, illegal immigrants everywhere, strange laws continually popping up, increasing crime -- not worth it. California is soon to go bankrupt, no forward progress is being made, so it's time to seriously consider getting out of this state.

Thanks for any advise or feedback you may have about TX.

I work a lot with travel to Austin, can I ask what industry you're in before I give advice?

Move to West Virginia. For what you pay to live in Californeeeeaaaaa you could be the next governor.

NA

(of course you'd have to get used to leaving the house to go to the crapper.)

LOL the traffic and illegal immigrant problem is just the same in Austin and the rest of the state. There are some really nice areas north of the city though. A friend just bought a house there and the surrounding area was very nice.

Good luck in your move!

There are quite a few job opportunities in Austin for IT work. I can do a search through some databases on job listings for you Rod.

Personally, I love Austin (Though I hate the Longhorns). Lots to do there, and great cigar retailers. Let me know if you have any particular questions Rod, or want me to do a search for you.

That's a good spot for that.

1) Austin is amazing to live, lots of fun and the eye candy is tremendous. I haven't lived there but travelling there and working with so many people there they rave about it. They tend to get tired of it after 5-10 years because when you're young it tends to be a place where you know everyone.

2) Dell owns that town, but with the university they tend to spin of lots of cool little companies, but there's a lot of talent, so tight prospects are possible.

Food's great, looking at girls is great, it gets hot as hell but EVERYONE in Texas likes Austin, so how bad can it be.

Rod, there is an outstanding homebrew supply store in Austin. I'd suggest avoiding it unless you want to be consumed by another hobby! :D

(why yes that's reason enough for me to consider moving somewhere)

I lived outside of Dallas in Las Colinas/ Irving. Great place to live. I only took the trip to Austin to go to party...oops I mean go to seminars. Nice place too.

Rod come to NJ, they really know how to tax the life out of you!

They did one of those shows on HGTV, about house hunting in Austin. Traffic there has to be easier than in LaLa land.

I doubt his mustang could handle the winters, Anthony.

You are right. He'd freak out when the road is frozen over and had to wear a real coat

Well, one thing I can tell you about Austin is that housing won't be THAT big a savings over California. A savings, definitely, but it's not like Seattle in the late 80's, when people could sell their home in SoCal, move up there and buy a mansion, a sailboat, and a business startup with the proceeds.

Traffic there is terrible, but if you're living in California . . . lol. I lived in Ventura '77-87 and I bet it's only gotten worse.

Have you thought about . . . *whispering* . . . San Antonio? Thriving economy (not so much as before the crunch, but healthy enough still), gorgeous houses and cool neighborhoods (Olmos Park, Terrell Hills, Monticello Park---Tommy Lee Jones lives there), a city of a bit over a million so there's restaurants, clubs, professional sports franchises, two amusement parks, some great cigar stores and lounges . . . and traffic is still tolerable, drivers are actually polite, and just like in Austin, you're right on the edge of the Hill Country, which is where good Texans get to go when they die. Or retire.

If I had to live in Austin, I'd want to be northside, outskirts, Lake Travis. Nice up there. But if my career wasn't in Corpus Christi, I'd be moving to San Antonio. Almost did anyway, actually.

Thanks Boar, good info.

What are some major (good) hospitals in/near Austin? I work in healthcare IT, and want to stay in this industry. Got out of banking IT and didn't look back.

Do it Rod. It'll be the greatest move you've ever made. Texas is hands down the greatest place I've ever been and I've been all over the world...

Move to Plano, Texas! by far the best place in Texas to live. There are major hospitals within a 15 min drive. I will be moving back to Plano at the end of the month!!!
