As I said in my introductory thread while I'm new to Cigar Pass I'm known in some other cigar communities. I actually joined Cigar Pass to interact with more people and generate interest in this idea. I've finally begin to really think about how to do this and I'm ready to start putting together a group of people who have a serious interest in starting a private club in the National Capitol Area.

I say I, but I've identitifed others who have an interest in the same agenda.

So if you have an interest and you are local to the national capitol area send me an email at bryan_winston@yahoo.com. What I'll then do is send you a strawman that says, this is what I currently think it takes to get a cigar club off the ground. If we can get 25 people together who want to explore it we'll elect some officers, get a business license, work out an operating agreement and business model and then go forward from there.

If you have general questions you can ask them here, in the email or later.

Also Mods if I'm in the wrong place move this thread but this is intended to be a business that DOESN'T generate a profit, any profits made by the club would be used for club improvements.

Met Bryan today. VERY nice and cool guy! One heck of a knowledge base on cigars too!
Good luck!

While I'm too far away AFAIK the MD smoking ban pertains to private clubs too. I'm sure there is more to it then just that but it is something to consider.

This next bit is basically a copy and paste from a similar thread I have going on another board:

Got an excellent question via email that I wanted to share as an fyi as other people are watching the thread and starting to think about private clubs elsewhere.

Bryan, are you aware the proposed smoking ban in Va includes private clubs? How do you plan to skirt that issue?

Well actually if you read the proposal verbatim it doesn't really ban smoking in bars or resturants per se, it simply bans smoking in "public places" and then defines bars and resturants as public places. Take a gander at it:

""Public place” means any enclosed area to which the public is invited or in which the public is permitted, including but not limited to, banks, bars, educational facilities, healthcare facilities, hotel and motel lobbies, laundromats, public transportation facilities, reception areas, retail food production and marketing establishments, retail services establishments, retail stores, shopping malls, sports arenas, theaters, and waiting rooms. “Public place” shall include a private club when being used for a function to which the general public is invited; however, a private residence is not a “public place” unless being used as a child care, adult day care, or healthcare facility."

So when you look at it your use as a private club becomes endangered when the "general public" is invited to participate. If entrance into the club needs to be sponsored by a member and thats the only way you can get it it neatly skirts that tenant. You could also simply do it in a house, but that would be a bit extreme, at least to start with. However all the private clubs in DC that allow smoking are basically in residences with 2 exceptions I can think of.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I had an excellent time last night and made some fast friends. You guys are definitely the kind of folks I'd love to be in the club with me.

Come on guys I couldn't possibly have heard from every stogie smoker in md and va yet.....

In another 10 years when I retire, this will be just the booming business that I'd love to get into! :) Good luck.

I'd be interested in more info. Frequency of events, purpose of club, expected dues, etc.
