I received an email from the folks at Cigar.com about a new concept in blending your own cigar. Pretty clever, although it's tough to do in such a way with any accuracy. And who's to say that you get what you pick? I can hear it now, "If the cigars taste different from what you expected, give them time and they'll come around."....

Still really cool though...

Nice concept and you have to give them credit on their marketing techniques.

I did not receive the email, but I haven't ordered from there before.  I have to admit, it's rather interesting.

Ok. I may have been the first to bite on this one.
I ordered the blending kit about 2 months ago and called in my blend about a month ago. Working on a 4-6 week wait, I should have my blend in a couple of weeks.
The concept was interesting and admittedly more work than I thought it would be. You basically receive 17 small cigarillos x2 in labeled baggies. You also receive an ordering guide which describes each cigarillo, its characteristics and provides spaces for notes, rating and preference number.  I chose a wrapper easily but then had to sit there and smoke 14 binders and fillers while taking notes all in one shot. You can then use your second cigarillo stick to group different fillers/binders together however you wish for evaluation purposes.
Choices are almost endless as you can use full or half leave quantities of any filler in many, many combinations. There are also two sizes available, Robusto (up to 4 whole leaves or 8 half leaves) and Toro (up to 3 whole leaves or 6 half leaves)
As a nice touch your name comes engraved somehow on the box and you can name your blend what ever you wish. I have two daughters and naturally will purchase two different blends named after them.

I'll be very interested to hear how it ends up.  Again, the idea sounds interesting, but I just can't imagine them being much to speak of.  Having said that, obviously a big part of the process is the novelty of it all, and to do it twice with your kids names is a pretty neat way to do it.  Maybe take some pics on the product once it arrives?

Now THAT'S the response I was looking for...very cool! Thanks for sharing and I can't wait to hear how your finished cigar measures up to what your expectations were after doing all that test smoking.

Up to this point, would you say the experience was worth the $250.00?

I have to admit the experience has been worth the $250. Even if the smokes are so-so, it was enjoyable sitting outside smoking 17 cigarillos and taking notes knowing I was actually having input on a cigar blend. How often do we ever get to do that ? Another impressive aspect is all the possible combinations you can create based on three wrappers, three binders and eleven fillers not to mention the ability to use half or whole leaves.  I will surely post photos and impressions once I receive my box. I actually emailed Cigars.com about an hour or so ago for a status as I live about 30 minutes from G.A.R. Deli, the actual rollers in Miami. Just going to swing by and pick them up once they are completed.
Finally, it would also be interesting to exchange sticks with others who have created their own blends. Maybe a light hearted review of each other for fun ?

I recvd that email too.

Cigar.com started emailing me again after a 5 or more year break.
I think I bought one order off of them, years ago, when Padilla re-released his previously Pepin blends. $100.00 a box for the Miami, 1932, and 1948.
Good deal. Still have some of those cigars.

I'd rather Jorge, Pepin, Abe Flores, or Carlito do the blending but, I suppose it would be fun if I had the time, or wanted to spend 450 bucks for the experience, which at present I do not.

I also received the email today, and thanks for sharing your experience with us bucfan444. I found it intriguing and possibly worthwhile. I will wait to see how your experience plays out in the end bucfan and yes, I agree, it would be fun be exchange blends with other participants.

They've had this in the last 2 catalogs.  I think it's pretty cool and a very novel idea.  But I'm cheap and lazy and this is too expensive and too much work.  I'd much rather buy some singles at my local or some fivers online in the search for something I really like.  Besides, even when I find a cigar I really like, I don't smoke it exclusively (especially when it's a pricey stick).  $250 is a lot of $$ for a box of cigars I'll smoke occasionally.  I already have enough "special occasion" smokes - don't need anymore.

I think it's a neat idea, but I won't be dropping $250 on it anytime soon.

For any of you who may be interested as to the outcome of these, I received by blend last week. I am enclosing some photos and my brief thoughts overall.
My last name is handwritten in gold on the top of the box, which is nicely presented. Last name is also written on the inside of the box top and on each band as well.
I named of the blend itself, in my case "Isabella" is handwritten on a gold inner wrapper. If I had to do it again, I would specify my daughters name be written on each individual cigar band instead of "Rodriguez".
Having smoked one after letting them settle down a few days, I can honestly say it was interesting to see my individual leaf selections combined.
Draw was dead on with very good smoke production. Burn line was also perfect the entire time with only one relight at the last third.
Doesn't do any good to comment about the flavor profile, as it was my choices but I am pleasantly surprised how well they turned out.
Worth $250.00 ?? That's a tough one. Its definitely a conversation piece and has its "cool" factor. Each of you will have to make that call for yourselves.

bucfan, I think that's pretty neat and definitely a conversation piece. If I had the time I would do this in a heartbeat. Hell, I might do this and put my wife's name on it - talk about kiss ass.  ;)
