Another Humi question

Hi Everyone,

I guess I just want to make sure I am heading down the right path. Search was my friend and I did a lot of reading. Up until now, I never knew you had to season a humidor. I learned quite a bit so far!

I bought a new 100 count humidor. Made sure that there was a good seal. Has an analog hygrometer. I know they are not known for accuracy and more for decorative purposes but I did calibrate it anyway for about 12 hours using the salt test and adjusted it accordingly.

I have a shot glass filled with distilled water sitting in it and and I charged the humidifier and I will let it season for 24hrs or so. Time wise, I am not sure on. How long should I season?

In the meantime, I ordred the 65% Tall, Humdi-Puck and a digital hygrometer. I hope I got the right size and RH puck for the humi.

Anyway, thats where I am at. Feedback welcome if I should be doing something differently or look at things a different way.

Thanks!

In all honesty that varies and does not have a fixed answer. There are alot of variables; how dry is the wood in the first place, how large is it, how much moisture are you adding to it etc. Patience is the key. You can speed things up alittle by heating the glass of water that you place in the humi in your microwave, the hot water gets into the wood quyicker. I don't like wiping the interior of the humi so i don't recommend that. I would give it a week to a week and a half then start adding cigars. The cigars will actually help the seasoning as well.

Thanks again. I didn't wipe the interior. In my homework, I found that is not the preferred way. So I will leave that shot glass in there for the time being.
In the mean time, I will wait until the digital hygrometer gets here, calibrate it and see where it is at and take it from there, I guess.

By the way, off topic, but I see you are in Carson City! My fiance's Mother lives there and we are planning a trip there in August. She has a brother in Gardnerville. She was raised in Carson City and the past two years, we visited there. I fell in love with the area.

She took me all around Tahoe, Rt. 395 corridor between Carson and Death Valley, Virginia city, etc. Last year we also went to, and I forget what it's called, but where all the stores stayed open and you got little free bees, there were bands playing and I got some cigars at Carson City cigar shop. It really was a great time. I always look foward to going there

Sounds to me like you're all set. When I used to use desktops, I'd wipe the inside surfaces with a sponge soaked with distilled water. I would recommend doing that if I were you.

Since you calibrated the analog hygrometer, you should be all set.

I would though recommend that you use beads for your humidification. I think viper just added a new product to his lineup that has a small sized puck with beads that would work for you.

Yep! I ordered the humidi-puck last night. I figure that by time it gets here, it should be seasoned by then.

And to think I thought at one time, you just added water to the humidifier. I am sure there are many who would cringe at that statement!!

Actually, not really, it just that it seems it takes forever and a day to "condition" the humi that way. It's not really "wrong" it just takes a heck of a long time to do it especially if it's empty.

No, I was worse than that. I actually thought you just added plain ole tap water to the humidifier and that was that and nothing more to do.

"Tap Water" is a dirty word when it comes to the beads. As you have read distilled only.

And back to the off topic; I agree i love it here in the Carson City area. The area has everything to offer and is still at a slower pace than most areas. I think you meant "Carson Cigar" when you mentioned the cigar store. It has a nice little bar and an OK humidor, not a huge selection but OK. In fact I was there last night with a few friends, a few drinks and a few cigars, great night.

Yep, "search" box was a good friend to me! I learned quite a bit in the past week or so.

Off topic again, It was "Taste of Downtown". We really had a great time at the event. I believe it was Carson Cigar. I got a cheap cutter from there. Never use it because it's a single cutter, but nice token of my time there. There is a strong possibility I will be back there in August so I can get my fix in. Perhaps we can do a meet there if your game?

My fiance and I have talked extensively about moving there or around the area after I retire. I strongly agree, everything to offer with a slower pace. I live north of the Philadelphia area and quite honestly, I look forward to moving!
