A special week; my first PAM64, and tonight, my first OpusX.
This was the "Fuente Fuente OpusX Robusto"; a size I really like. A great BOTL gifted me this one while I was in the process of buying a couple of the OpusX line to try (LouieD, you be da man...). After a big lunch, I came home and broke this bad boy out of the humi.
Out of the cello, the first word that came to mind was "spicy". Felt and smelled wonderful; I was really impressed with the tangy pre-light flavors and aromas of this gar. It looked, felt, and smelled great. A snip with the Xikar and the pre-light draw told me that this was a very well constructed gar. Pre-light draw was nice and open, but not too open. Again, the spicy flavors were very surprising; they had me really looking forward to this one.
A glass of icy cold water was the beverage for tonight (big lunch... ).
A careful, even toasting of the foot and she burst forth with a very spicy, intense bundle of flavors. Cinnamon? Pepper? This and more - very different than the PAM64 I had earlier this week. One thing I've noticed with better gars is that there is a very complex bunch of flavors that develops and changes as the gar goes along; it's what makes them interesting and makes me want to try another. This wonderful smoke was no exception. While the PAM64 took a half inch or so to smooth out and develop, this one got going right off the bat. The spice developed, intensified and changed as it went along. Very cool, nice on the palate, which was a bit of a surprise given the intensity of the taste. I've probably said "spicy" ten times by now, but that's the single most noticable trait of this one, given my nO0b taste description vocabulary.
As I expect from a quality cigar, the draw and burn was flawless. No "touch ups" required and nothing more need be said in that regard; it was just perfect. The smoke was very dense and lingered under the roof of my deck as it went along. My wife remarked how nice it smelled....and, I have to agree. Very unique in this regard. Smoked it down until I couldn't hang on any longer; the flavors just kept changing, developing, and was a really intense, flavorful smoke. Just one more...one more...until there was no way to hang on any longer. WooHoo...!!
If the PAM64 was "powerful, rich and smooth" this one was "saucy, spicy and intense". Not sure if that makes any sense but the contrast between the two was really intersting and I'm glad I had fresh memories of the PAM64 to compare with. You bet I'll smoke another....and another, etc....
